Seeking support can be a challenging step to take. I am here to help. As a chartered clinical psychologist registered with the Health & Care Professions Council, I am trained to provide individuals, couples, and groups with evidence-based psychological treatments for a range of difficulties that can affect general well-being and quality of life. You may struggle with low mood and anxiety, and may be affected by issues such as relationship problems, low self-esteem, loss and bereavement, trauma, sexual problems, or substance misuse. It is also common to experience a number of issues at once, making problems seem insurmountable.

I am an integrative psychotherapist. I work across a range of modalities including rational emotive behavioural therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, parts work, theta healing and interpersonal therapy. I believe it’s important to address the underlying cause first and then to add in some of the evidence based approaches which is why I lean towards to an integrative style in my practice. It also allows for adaptability depending on the patient and the presenting issue(s). In addition to the modern psychological modalities, I am also trained in some of the ancient spiritual practices and mindfulness work.

Do you feel stuck in unhelpful patterns? Do you feel exhausted, like you’re constantly swimming against the current? Maybe your relationships with family, friends, or colleagues can be difficult, and you feel misunderstood and isolated. Sometimes we aren’t always aware of the reasons that are making us feel low. You might be holding onto anger, anxiety, shame, sadness, without the support to help navigate these feelings and create the changes you need. As a creative psychotherapist who works with clients who have these experiences, I am here to support you in this process, in a safe, inclusive, neuro-affirming environment.

You may be feeling worried, down, stressed, fed up, conflicted, confused, or simply wishing for change. It may feel difficult to manage life and you may have no idea why, or you might have some ideas. Perhaps you’ve had difficult experiences during childhood, adolescence or adulthood. Perhaps the thought of talking to someone feels a bit scary but better than keeping everything bottled up. You may wish to improve your relationship or relationships in general. Perhaps things happen in your life and you don’t understand why, or how. You might find that you’re drawn to distractions like the internet, or overspending.

At times life can be overwhelming: loneliness, divorce, grief, parenting or work challenges... Even natural transitions can throw us off. Coping with difficult feelings alone can be daunting. I provide a safe, confidential space, in which to identify and work through what is troubling you. You can expect to explore unresolved issues, bringing greater understanding of yourself and your patterns of relating. I am interested in the roles you take within families, couples and work. Prior to re-training, I had a career in law and finance, so am familiar with high-pressure environments, stress and the search for a healthy life-balance.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
