Life can be complex and often overwhelming, leaving us at times feeling isolated and alone even when we are surrounded by people. As such there might be many different reasons why people come into counselling. Sometimes the issues we experience have clear causes and explanations and at other times it might feel less obvious and harder therefore to identify. What I would hope to offer you is a place that feels safe, supportive and confidential where you are able to explore whatever it is for you personally that you want to address without fear of judgement and criticism.

Are you fed up or despairing to find yourself in the same old cycle of addictive or compulsive behaviour yet again? I help people who are stuck in these patterns to feel hopeful, optimistic and confident about regaining control of their lives. Addictions and compulsive behaviours can begin as our way of coping. Whether that is alcohol, drugs and gambling or shopping, over-eating and pornography ........or any other repetitive behaviour - they seem to ‘steal our lives’ and still leave us with our original problem. Perhaps we don't even know why our compulsive behaviour started - we only know that we need to make a change.

Deciding to come for counselling can be a big step; it may be something you've been wondering about for some time. Life throws up many situations unexpectedly and we can end up somewhere we never imagined being, unsure what to do next or lacking confidence in ourselves. We may feel our relationships are not working the way we had hoped. Counselling can help with specific issues or with a general sense of having lost yourself through life; not being sure of what you want or struggling with what has happened. The most important factor for successful counselling is finding a counsellor who you feel able to talk to.

Therapy can help if you're experiencing feelings of loss, loneliness, anxiety, or depression: either for reasons you know, or reasons you maybe don’t yet know. Life transitions such as bereavement, a new job, retirement, divorce, or becoming a parent, can sometimes trigger feelings of worry and self-doubt. Or maybe something just doesn’t feel right: a sense of wondering who you are in the present moment, and what to do next. Being able to explore feelings and emotions in a safe space can give you a greater understanding of what’s happening in your life, and how to become clearer about what you want and need moving forward.

I am a fully qualified integrative therapist, experienced in working with couples and individuals of all ages, and from all walks of life. I'm not your everyday counsellor, I truly believe that we all have it within us to be our best selves, happy and content, but that comes from understanding ourselves better. I often see clients in the middle of a crisis who need more immediate help, and I also work with people who are otherwise happy but want help moving forwards in their life. I see couples who may have got into bad habits, and may want help building an environment which will enable the relationship to flourish once again.

Whether you're seeking support for a particular issue, struggling with a painful event or simply wanting more from life, counselling and psychotherapy can help you gain a deeper awareness and understanding of yourself, your relationships with others and your place in the world. Whatever you're experiencing, the therapeutic relationship nurtures a confidential space where you're truly listened to, and met with a balance of warmth, empathy and respectful challenge. In giving attention to whatever is painful and difficult, it can enable the emergence of a stronger sense of self, and connection with meaning, purpose, potential and hope.

Hello, I’m Julia, a person-centred counsellor and a qualified adoption support counsellor. I am a registered member of BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy). I wonder what might have led you to here. Perhaps something has happened that has turned your world upside down. Maybe life feels overwhelming. Perhaps you feel lost, alone, misunderstood. We all have times when life seems a struggle, when we may feel anxious or sad or hopeless and counselling can offer a space where we can start to touch on those tender bruises inside which often leads to a greater understanding of ourselves and our situation.

Come in, sit by the fire and tell me all about it. What’s been going on that’s made you look for a counsellor now? Are there things from the past that feel unfinished and still play a part now. Perhaps a crisis or a difficult dilemma has your head spinning and anxiety rocketing in nit knowing what to do. Counselling can help bring clarity, confidence, leaving the past in the past where it belongs. What have you got to lose? What do you hope to gain? I’d love to hear about it.

When our children experience significant emotional distress, it is extremely difficult for them and for you. I aim to support a child or young person with dignity and respect, working with a warm, caring and sensitive individual approach to suit their needs. I use the relationship between myself and the child at the centre of the therapy. I then guide the therapeutic process using theories from psychoanalysis, Gestalt theory and neuroscience's somatic theories. This knowledge informs my understanding of a child's developmental traumas, often the foundations of the current problematic thinking and behaviours being experienced.

Life takes us all by surprise at times and sometimes we can bounce back, but sometimes we need a bit of a helping hand; being able to identify those times and reach out is a sign of strength and the first step to taking control. If you are reading this then you have already taken the first step and I commend you for that.

People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons. Whatever is going on for you, I offer a safe and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions and the challenges you are going through. I have experience working with anxiety, anger, self-esteem, relationships, abuse, trauma, guilt and shame. Specialising in work with LGBTQ+ clients, I have worked with a wide range of issues around gender and sexual relationship diversity. Whilst these may or may not be the focus of our work together, I provide a space where clients can consider how these aspects of identity affect their wider lives.
