Anxiety and low self-esteem are my areas of expertise. Anxiety can be extremely debilitating, it often causes excessive worry about everyday things that the rational side of the brain struggles to understand. It can often lead to difficulties in concentration, restlessness and catastrophic thinking. This is often accompanied by a critical inner ear that lacks compassion. The clients that choose me often find themselves engaging in some of the above traits and want to learn how to cope with the challenges they face. My approach to therapy aims to empower my clients to reach their goals using self-discovery.

At times it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and stressed out by life. That can create deep sadness, despair or loss of hope resulting in depression. Feeling fearful and anxious about life and the future can feel too much to cope with and have a really profound affect on everyday life. Sometimes it is recent events that are causing you to feel that you are really struggling while at other times those difficulties are linked to childhood neglect, trauma or abuse. Sometimes how you feel about yourself can result in a lack of confidence or low self esteem which can impact on your ability to feel at peace in the world and in relationship.

Have you been struggling through life, feeling overwhelmed and wishing you had someone to talk to? It could just be a general sense of feeling down or more deep-rooted feelings of loneliness, anxiety, stress and depression. If this is you then talking to a trained therapist presents the opportunity for you to explore your issues. Our life situations can bring challenges at home, work, and socially, leading to complex emotions like loneliness, confusion, guilt, and self-doubt. You may feel hypervigilant, irritable, or overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts, wishing for an ‘off switch.’ Emotional struggles can impact daily life—causing brain fog, forgetfulness, and tension in relationships with loved ones or colleagues. Even simple tasks can feel daunting, and pleasing others may overshadow your own needs, leaving you feeling stuck and questioning your self-worth.

A great deal of my practice is focused on supporting individuals going through challenging times in their lives due to anxiety, depression and those having difficulty in finding direction. I have particular experience supporting people suffering from chronic or terminal illness and with bereaved people, exploring the many complex feelings of grief which arise at such times. I am very comfortable and able to work with clients who have concerns about sexual identity and sexuality. I am also a qualified supervisor. Within this role, again, I base my practise on a developmental, relational model.

How we are with ourselves matters. At the core of my counselling work is you. Does trauma, grief or anxiety steer you away from where you are or what you are striving towards? I understand sharing these experiences can be overwhelming and uncomfortable. In a confidential and calm space, I will support you through your thoughts and emotions. At your pace, we will understand and reflect on past and present experiences, inviting compassionate inner dialogue, coping strategies, and movement away from shame and criticism. I will not judge you.

Life is full of events, relationships, stresses and strains and all these impact on us in many different ways. It can affect all the important things to us such as school, work, relationships and our own perception of ourselves. This can be tiring and overwhelming. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way and I believe strongly that a person can benefit from having a space to discuss their feelings and develop ideas and strategies to improve their emotional wellbeing.

Chronic Illness Counsellors
How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.
Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.
How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
