Life is hard. Coming to terms with this can be very challenging, especially when we have to come to terms with circumstances that we feel unprepared for. This makes us feel anxious, uncertain and fearful. Suddenly the ground has shifted and our sense of security has been shattered. We feel vulnerable and isolated. Finding someone who can really listen and help is not easy. I will help you navigate this new place with compassion, kindness and understanding. I can help restore your confidence and give you the strength to continue to move forward.

Life can feel overwhelming and too much, and you want help. You might be struggling with anxiety, depression, a bereavement, low self-esteem, family issues, or many other problems. I have seen time and again that counselling can be an excellent tool in maintaining and improving your mental health. Many of my clients attest to feeling different after our sessions. Such as a sense of feeling calmer even after an introductory call, or first session. Some clients have found they sleep better after a few sessions, or have reduced panic attacks. Some clients spiral less, feel more in control of their life or may feel more confident.

It may seem a little daunting to find the right therapist, especially when life is feeling difficult and maybe you don’t quite know what you need. I’ve met many people who have been in this position and found relief when they experience a warm, compassionate engagement while they tell their story. When we experience being listened to at a deep level this can change how we experience our inner struggles and find more ease within ourselves even though, initially, the external circumstances have not changed. But we have changed. Maybe this feels small but it is a vital shift in enabling us to face what is difficult.

As a psychotherapist, counsellor, supervisor and trainer, I am passionate about emancipation and freedom. My practice is characterised by offering you a space - online or face-to-face - where you can discover your identity and regain a sense of autonomy and connectedness. I seek to support my clients to move from a place of feeling perhaps lost and alienated to a position where they feel connected to themselves, to others and to the ground upon which they walk. As a client, you may be seeking to manage a significant and sudden change in your life. I would like to work shoulder-to-shoulder with you to address these difficulties.

I offer couples and individual counselling. Initially I trained with Relate and extended my experience and training to individual work. My specialisms include relationship work, anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement and loss and inner child work. Counselling helps you to explore and understand the issues making life difficult for you. I do not advise but I do share knowledge. Our first session would be for you to tell me what you are finding difficult, for me to answer your questions about counselling and tell you more about what is involved. Most importantly it is for you to see if you feel comfortable talking with me.

I help those who seek clarity about their situation, through discussion of the challenges. Viewing issues from multiple perspectives, including evidence based models helps you to get things more in perspective, more malleable, and more manageable. I see to your needs & provide resources as you transition, while we face issues together, & grow your capacity to journey beyond me. This may involve an exploration of the past, or practical focus on here & now strategies & approaches, which influence the map of your life journey you are carving.

Behavioural Issues Counsellors
What happens in therapy for behavioural issues?
No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behaviour issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.
What therapy types help with behavioural issues?
Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.
How long does therapy last for behavioural issues?
Among popular approaches to treating behavioural concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behaviour management, often used when the underlying cause of behaviour issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioural issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.
How effective is therapy for behaviour issues?
Studies show that therapy for behaviour issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behaviour later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behaviour. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
