Hi and welcome, I am an experienced Therapist and coach. I work with adults & elders. Our initial session is to make sure that you are confident with me to continue (there is no obligation to do so) & also for me to understand a little about what brings you to therapy. I have had the privilege to work with many clients with complex issues. I believe the therapeutic relationship is very important. I also invite you to review the therapy regularly to ensure you are getting the most out of the sessions. When appropriate, I work creatively & with humour. If you have any questions please do contact me.

Hello, my name is Matthew and I’m a counsellor based at Havant Meeting Place - Havant United Reformed Church. I acknowledge counselling is a brave step to take with initially making the enquiry and then having the courage to attend the first session. I have had counselling in my life and being listened to seemed surreal at first. Friends and family had always given their opinions and reassurances, with the best of intentions at heart, yet being really listened to was ground-breaking for me. I aim to ease any anxiety by arranging an appointment as soon as possible so therapy can begin.

As a humanistic counsellor I believe in the potential for growth and fulfilment within each individual. I strive to create a safe and supportive space where you may explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly and honestly. Humanistic counselling is collaborative work that emphasises your unique perspective and lived experiences. It centres around the idea that you have the capacity for self-healing and personal growth. It is not about diagnosing or fixing problems, but rather empowering you to discover your own strengths and resources.

Beginning counselling can be difficult and challenging, and choosing the right counsellor for you is an important step towards starting that process. Perhaps you are feeling depressed or anxious and cannot understand why, or maybe you’re finding relationships tough to navigate. Sometimes we are unable to understand the difficult feelings we are experiencing and that can feel overwhelming. People seek counselling for different reasons, and I am here to listen to you without judgement or agenda.

Counselling can be really helpful when you just need someone to talk to and it can offer so much more. When you are feeling like something is just not right or life seems so challenging, talking to a Counsellor can make the difference. Many people just want to feel better and get a sense of relief from the turmoil of life. It may be that a life event has really impacted on you, such as a bereavement, trauma or loss of a job. You may feel like the world just does not understand you or perhaps you are struggling to come to terms with your sexuality. There are many many different reasons why people choose counselling. We're all unique.

Life isn't always easy. When things are too difficult to handle alone, it can be helpful to talk with someone outside of your situation without fear of judgement. I provide a safe, confidential space to be heard, understood and cared for. My primary aim is to be a source of support, hope and encouragement during your counselling journey.

People come to counselling when their life is not going as they want it to be. With sensitive listening, empathy and gentle observation I can help you to become aware of what is troubling you and why. You may be having difficulties in one or more of a wide range of difficulties including anger, anxiety, bereavement, depression, divorce and separation, family issues, guilt, loneliness, injury, loss and grief, low self esteem, relationship issues or stress. I can help you by really listening in a non-judgemental way and supporting you as you listen to yourself, which will lead to greater self-acceptance, understanding and resilience.

Hello, there are many and varied reasons why people seek counselling or therapy with no problem being too big or too small. Modern day life can leave us struggling to balance work, family and relationships resulting in us experiencing feelings of failure, self doubt, low in confidence, feeling overwhelmed, confused, lost, defeated and burnt out. At times we can experience significant change and loss. We can be left with feelings of low mood and anxiety and struggle to make sense of our experience. Maybe we realise that difficult past events or life experiences continue to affect us.

I help people with a wide range of issues including depression and anxiety and I am also experienced in working with adults in difficult situations such as chronic or life-limiting illnesses, their carers and families. My experience includes working in Hospitals and Hospices and for a national bereavement charity. Do you feel lost and alone but don’t want to be a burden to your friends and family? Perhaps you feel okay and then a song comes on the radio or you smell someone’s scent and you are catapulted into an overwhelming sense of sadness. Do you put your needs behind everyone else’s or at the bottom of your to do list?

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
