Most people will experience times in their lives when they are worried or distressed. In an initial consultation we will explore the ways I might be able to help so that family life and emotional well-being can improve.

Hi, I am an experienced psychotherapist who can support you to explore whatever you wish to bring and then encourage you to find your own solutions. Psychotherapy allows us to explore our life and experiences and reach a deeper understanding of ourselves. This occurs in an atmosphere of safety and respect and offers a space in which you are really listened to and the whole of you is welcomed. People come to therapy for different reasons, but at the root of most of these is the experience of suffering. Therapy offers us the opportunity to enquire into the nature of our suffering and discover our innate capacity for healing.

Couples often come to see me at a crucial turning point in their relationship, following the birth of a child, after an affair, or when communication feels like it has broken down. I also see individuals affected by the same issues, plus anxiety and grief, loss, depression or a sense that life may not have turned out the way they would have hoped. Whatever you’re struggling with, having a non-judgmental other, who is able to think when thinking can often feel impossible, can bring relief and a feeling of being understood, perhaps for the very first time.

You may be feeling sad, confused or curious. You may be looking for support in understanding a difficult period or relationship in your life. You may be feeling desperate or feeling things just aren't right. Putting concerns into words and sharing your thoughts and feelings can be the first step to addressing the issues and resolving them. If we think together about significant relationships and events we can usually together come to an understanding that will help clarify why events have thrown you off balance. We may discover what is blocking your joy and energy. Self awareness can deepen and self compassion grow.

Therapy is a unique and powerful undertaking that can change how you see yourself in the world. It can also be a playful and creative way to recover aspects of yourself that have been hidden, rejected or disallowed. I work with individuals who wish to explore their life and what they want it to be, or who are experiencing problems with relationships, anxiety, depression, illness, work or bereavement. I have a particular interest in working with dreams and creativity, both of which can be a means of tapping into inner processes and potential.

Asking for help can be really daunting. If you are here, reading this, and have recognised that you might benefit from the kind of support that therapy offers, then you have already taken a big step. There can be lots of reasons you might benefit from therapy. You might be dealing with a difficult time, such as an illness, bereavement, a separation. You might be feeling stressed, anxious, lost or low more often than feels ‘ok’. You might want to understand yourself better, why you feel and behave the way you do, or want to feel more alive.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
