Counselling for me was an absolute gift. Having experienced first hand what it is like to receive counselling and going on my own therapeutic journey, both before training, during training and still now, I believe that everyone could benefit from therapy. I am a Person Centred Counsellor and can offer you a safe space to explore and externalise your emotions and work through whatever feelings that you want to bring. I really believe that asking for help is the first step to self awareness which in turn can bring you self acceptance and most importantly self worth. I would invite you to read on and consider me as your counsellor.

You may experience unexpected disruption, chronic conditions, major life upheaval, triggering of past experiences, bereavement, and any of these could create anxiety, trauma or depression. Understanding could fall away, your support system could become unhelpful, anti-depressants may not be effective and your coping mechanisms may not work. You may feel overpowered by your circumstances and perhaps seek support and reinforcement as you experience distress. You may want your complex issues to be contained and get some tools and techniques to cope. Perhaps you may just like to confide in someone and share your experience.

I am a Chartered Principal Clinical Psychologist whose approach to therapy is psychodynamic, focusing on understanding a person’s individual experience of the world and the problems they’ve come to live with. This involves us working together to try to understand the particular meaning of one’s difficulties and troubling feelings and how and why such distressing experiences have occurred at this point in life. Such understandings often help people feel less troubled and ‘stuck’, for example with depression, anxiety or traumatic experiences, clearing the way for feeling more settled in oneself and an ability to make changes.

Life throws us challenges that are tough to get through! Sometimes we just need someone to talk to - Someone to listen - Someone, to help us to make sense of what is happening or has happened in our lives now and most importantly how we can move forward…

Sometimes life can seem overwhelming and we can be dealing with something painful. We all have times when we need emotional support. You do not have to struggle alone. Often it is only when we talk to someone unconnected with our lives that we begin to hear what we are really saying and feeling. I offer a safe, unjudgemental and confidential space for you to work through what is troubling you and will support you as you find new ways forward.

Reasons for coming to Therapy are unique to each person. You may have hopes and desires to be a better version of yourself, a willingness to change, to face the difficulties that may obstruct your personal growth. Life’s challenges may leave you anxious, stressed or depressed, feeling stuck, unable to move forward, alone with unwanted thoughts and feelings. Patterns in your life can keep you in a cycle of inner conflict and, at times, relationship conflicts, not knowing why. Talking to someone is a great way to start. Please don’t choose to fight this alone; it’s time to give yourself the time and space to explore.

Life can be challenging, hard and demanding at times and we could all use someone to talk to and explore our thoughts, feelings and ideas with. As an experienced, qualified and an accredited person-centred therapist, I can offer a safe, confidential and freeing space where I can support you and your needs in a non-judgemental, open and honest environment, which can enable genuine change to occur in your life. Having worked alongside clients who have presented with issues such as, abuse, depression, anxiety, loss, stress and more I can understand how scary seeking counselling can be - however my role is to support you through this.

Person Centred counselling is client led, my role is to provide empathy, transparency and a non judgemental environment, by focusing on the 'here and now' and the feelings you experience, clarity and become increasingly self aware. Analytical hypnotherapy uses relaxation and visualisation to assist you in looking at past trauma and unresolved conflicts. In a relaxed state you are able to work subconsciously to investigate and resolve past issues, irrational thinking, eliminating negative habits and behaviour, enabling healing to occur.

Relationships can be difficult, miscommunication & misattunement of emotions can create patterns of behaviour that can lead to a lack of connectiveness & blocks to intimancy. This can trigger a fight or flight response & the cycle continues. In therapy you can learn to communicate your care seeking & care giving needs in a clear way & change the relationship to a more secure & attuned base. You'll learn the skills to listen to each other & navigate the ruptures & repairs that are part of all relationships. I will work to provide a safe & non biased space for you to resolve them together & decide the best way forward.

I am an experienced, qualified and approachable psychotherapist working with individual adults. Feelings of depression, anxiety or a lack of direction or meaning in life need to be understood in a broad context. By looking at our whole life we can uncover who we really are and where we wish to go. I offer a safe space where troublesome, dark and difficult feelings can be examined and explored - by bringing them into the light we open up the possibility of facing and understanding them.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
