Sometimes we can manage the mental, physical and emotional challenges of life, be it those that have come on suddenly or those that have left us struggling from the long-term exposure to or memories of. At others, we may experience feeling depressed, overwhelmed, anxious or stuck. These are normal responses, but they can leave us struggling to enjoy life, know which direction to take or even like there is something wrong with us. I can support you in gaining clarity and understanding around your thoughts, feelings and behaviour so that you can regain balance and direction for your future.

Do you feel despair or a growing distance in your relationship no matter what you do? Are you struggling to communicate with your partner? My clients often tell me they miss warmth & affection and wish they could turn back the clock to happier times. Perhaps your partner had an affair and you're both scared and don't know what to do now. Either way, one thing's for sure: you’re desperate for some relief. It might be hard to imagine your relationship could be full of fun and laughter again but this has happened with my clients. Together we can move you from anxiety and stuckness to feeling happy again.

Having worked in the NHS for over fifteen years; I specialise in Psychiatric care and Neurodiversity. As a Neurodivergent therapist, I have found from practice and my research, which evidences Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy; strong therapeutic alliance with my patients; there's reassurance, safety and a sense of belonging when working with someone who actually gets you! I have worked hard to ensure therapy caters to and adapts to our brains! Techniques such as eye contact, open questions, long silences, often made me and my patients want to run away, perpetuating a belief of hopelessness and helplessness.

Hello, I'm Chloe Johnstone, a dedicated psychotherapist with a passion for supporting individuals. I offer collaborative psychotherapy with my use of the Relational Approach, and my Integrative training allows me to draw from various approaches, such as: Transactional Analysis, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Somatic Therapy. Relational psychotherapy emphasises the importance of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client. Together, we would consider the role of interpersonal dynamics and how past relationships, especially in early life, influence your current psychological state.

If you are looking for help with emotional and relationship difficulties, psychotherapy can help you to explore your current difficulties and to understand those in the context of your life. Therapy can help you to identify destructive patterns in relationships and to see how these are rooted in the past and the unconscious dynamics behind them. Through this process, new ways of relating in your personal life can be developed. Individual therapy can vary in frequency with the number of sessions per week ranging from once or twice a week.

A Psychoanalytic Therapy enables a deepening understanding of ourselves, our relationships and the emotional difficulties that we face that are an inherent feature of living.
People who embark on a psychoanalytically informed therapy attend for a variety of reasons. Depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, stress, shame or low self esteem, what is important is that the problems have been around for some time and despite our best efforts do not improve by trying to address them on our own. This leaves us feeling stuck and alone, with increasing symptoms and frustrations. The aim of this type of therapy is to not only to help with the conscious symptoms, but to help develop understanding and awareness of what lies beneath the symptoms, enriching our lives and relationships, enabling change.

I integrate psychodynamic, Jungian and psychoanalytic practice, focusing on relatedness, the unconscious, and the transpersonal/spiritual.
You may feel you are not getting the most out of your life for reasons known or unknown. I work with the unconscious through dreams and imagery to help you connect more fully with yourself, giving you access to your own deeper needs and desires clearing the way for you to change as you chose. You may need the convenience of working online or via the telephone (F2F not available). Often my way of working appeals to those who are interested in the arts and/or the spiritual realm and those who appreciate deeper ways of working, in safe and supportive relationship.

Although my training is in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, I think it is important to adapt an integrative approach dependent on what feels most appropriate for the presenting issues that one brings to therapy.
I am a UKCP registered Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and have 23 years experience of working in mental health both within the NHS and tertiary services. I previously trained as a mental health social worker and have extensive experience of working with adults and families who have experienced severe mental health difficulties. Since qualifying as a Psychotherapist, I have specialised in working with people who have personality disorders. I have extensive experience of working with trauma, including complex trauma and PTSD. I have completed a training in group therapy and hold a qualification as a Group Work Practitioner.

I practice an integrative therapy based on the Person Centre Approach and the Lacanian psychoanalytic orientation.
You might be seeking support for many reasons, such as anxiety, addictions, loss of direction, self harm, identity issues, relationship difficulties or trauma. I will create the conditions to help you feel deeply listened to and explore what ever brought you into therapy. These basic conditions will often make you feel accepted, more confident in your judgements and less afraid of expressing your thoughts and emotions. From that place you can start to deeply explore and learn about who you are and undergo your personal journey of healing and transformation

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
