Hi and welcome to my profile. I know it can be daunting reaching out for support and you might be wondering whether you will be judged, worried about opening up to a stranger, scared that you might get too overwhelmed with emotions and embarrass yourself and even worried your information will get out once you start talking to me. I want you to know that from personal experience I know taking the first step can be difficult and I understand why you might be scared to do so. You are not alone in how you are feeling and most people who are thinking about counselling can feel this way at the beginning.

I have 26 years’ experience as a solution-focused therapist, psychologist and coach: helping couples to communicate effectively and let go of resentments; and helping individuals to overcome trauma, anxiety, childhood abuse, OCD, ADHD and other problems. I will help you to clarify your goals; identify what it is within you that is blocking achievement of your goals; find out where this comes from in your biography; and help you to process the experience to permanently resolve your problem. This person-centred therapy enables you fully to overcome your problem, not simply to understand or manage it, enabling swift transformation.

I work with both children and adults and have a keen interest in working with those who have experienced complex/relational trauma with or without self harming/suicidal behaviour. I work with a variety of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. I also work with couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship and work towards understanding the emotional conflicts, that result in the relationship being strained or likely to end without support. There is no one size fits all therapeutic approach and so I place importance on developing a shared understanding of what the core emotional issues are that impact you.

I am a BACP-registered integrative counsellor. I have had over 6yrs experience working within the NHS as service desk analyst in a non-clinical role before graduating from Birmingham Newman University with a Bachelor’s Degree (B.A) in counselling studies and currently completing a Master’s Degree (MSc) in integrative counselling. My training cut across several counselling modalities based on PCT as a core approach providing the foundation for therapeutic alliance with my clients. Along this, depending on the client presenting issue, I draw on CBT, Gestalt, mindfulness and psychodynamic modalities in my clinical formulation.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
