Life can present us with many struggles, ranging from those arising from specific circumstances or existential concerns, through to more complex and long-standing difficulties. I have experience of working with many different concerns, including anxiety, depression, high levels of shame and self-criticism, difficulties in relationships, low self-esteem, self harm and/or suicidal thoughts, sexual abuse, and difficult family dynamics/early experiences (including growing up with parents who may have been very loving, but struggled to recognise and attune to your emotional needs).

Welcome, I’m Andrea, a counsellor based in Guildford and Camberley. I have worked for over 17 years supporting people with mental wellbeing. I've helped those who have found their mental health has suffered due to a variety of reasons. I find the counselling relationship is like no other. It offers a safe and non-judgmental space to explore thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism or misunderstanding whilst valuing your individual experiences. I believe a therapeutic relationship that’s based on trust, respect, and openness will facilitate change.

Hi. You're probably here because you are finding life tough. Life can be so hard, and it can feel even harder finding help. After years of working in Education and the NHS, I know how tricky it can be to access support. I aim to fill that gap. I work particularly with neurodivergence (ADHD, autism etc): with young people struggling + using tricky coping strategies; with parents who feel lost + overwhelmed; and with adults who are for the first time learning who they are + need help to figure that all out. I also specialise in eating disorders, self harm, body image, anxiety, OCD, trauma. Maybe I can help?

My main aim in life has and always will be to help people find peace and joy in their lives. This can be very difficult to source when life today is so challenging. Whether it is financial worries, loss of a loved one, disability, illness, family issues, bullying, work pressure, trauma, (amongst others) all can induce stress, depression and anxiety. Besides a wealth of life experience, I have a degree in Integrative relationship counselling, which enables me to work in a way to suit each individual and their issues. We will work together at your pace to find a healing path.

In an ever-changing and uncertain world, counselling is an opportunity to take stock and reflect on how life feels for you. No matter what your concern might be, I can give you a safe place to explore your unique take on life. Difficult thoughts and feelings can be listened to respectfully and without fear of being judged. Whether you're feeling anxious, unfulfilled or unable to cope - you don't have to face your struggle alone. Talking things through can lighten the emotional load, restore perspective and bring positive change.

Are you experiencing a difficult or challenging time in your life? Perhaps you are feeling stuck and unable to move forward? Whatever your reason for considering therapy and viewing my profile, it is often the case that we 'hit the wall' or 'crash' emotionally before we can identify that we may need professional support. When our usual coping mechanisms no longer work the struggle can be overwhelming. As your therapist I recognise this as your first and critical step toward positive change. You are, I'm sure, familiar with the phrase 'if you do what you've always done...you get what you've always got' and how true it is.....

Whatever you are feeling now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Life can be tricky sometimes and you may think that people can't understand you because of what you are going through. Sometimes you need someone to listen to you, to help you to understand what is actually happening. I can help you to walk through this journey, to find a way to a safe place which respects your values and beliefs. You can talk about any issues that bother you and explore your emotions without judgment. I have 19 years of training and experience in a broad range of topics in psychotherapy counselling and educational therapy.

Hello, I'm Deborah. Sometimes, we realise we need some support to cope with how we feel, but we may think it is too small to mention, or that it would be too much to share. You might be working through relationship, work or family challenges? Perhaps, you are feeling low, but not quite sure why? Just having someone to listen and support you in a non-judgmental way can help with perspective and recognising patterns or coping mechanisms. I have much experience in helping clients with anxiety, depression, stress, loss, sexual abuse, traumatic events, relationship issues or family conflicts.

I see that all behaviours such as self-harm, suicide attempts, drinking, drug abuse and other impulsive behaviours have developed as coping strategies to cope with and numb difficult emotions and experiences. These behaviours often act as a plaster to a deeper wound, but just like a plaster they don’t really ever fully heal unless they have time to heal properly. This is the work of therapy to take off the plaster and look more towards the root causes of the behaviour to work out what is going on for you.

We can all have difficulties in everyday life and encounter problems that we simply find hard to cope with alone. You may feel worried, anxious, low, confused, isolated or may be experience difficulties in relationships. You may be suffering from feelings of low self esteem or low self confidence. You may have been diagnosed with anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, depression, or maybe you are just feeling sad. When these feelings and thoughts persist and become overwhelming it may be difficult to know which way to turn.

You may be feeling life is just too much to manage right now, perhaps you've had a bereavement or loss, or maybe something from the past is impacting on how you are feeling. Asking for professional help can feel daunting, but once you've made that decision, it can bring relief and then finding the right person, who can hear your concerns and support you, is really important. I can offer a safe, confidential space and give you the time and space to explore what is going on for you, to help you gain awareness and insight into what's troubling you and help you reach your goals.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
