Hi! I'm a therapist who walks alongside you. Whatever it is, you're not alone. Whatever you are feeling, this is real, and there is a reason. There is also a way towards change, and this is a journey of self-discovery. Feeling lost, anxious, or stuck? Life gets you down sometimes and you're trying to make sense of things? Want to gain more understanding of yourself? Feel the need to make changes? Would you like to enhance your self-esteem, sense of self or self-worth? Perhaps you're dealing with the impact of growing up with emotionally unavailable parents, or facing challenging romantic, social or friendship relationships.

Life events can trigger emotions that are difficult to understand or express. Sudden trauma, redundancy, a business failure, a relationship breakdown, bereavement, abuse, bullying and harassment, or struggles with gender and sexual identity. The list is endless and is as individual as us. These can prevent clear thinking and create worries or reactions, which can go on to cause anxiety, shame, confusion, or possible feelings of guilt that are hard to recognise or cope with. They may also cause a reaction of self-destruction, self-harm, eating disorders, drinking, drug use and other issues.

I have some availability for couples and individuals. I'm an integrative therapist (humanistic/existential/psychoanalytic) also influenced by the cognitive awareness that comes from mindfulness. However, my practice is influenced just as much by my own lived experience and my doubts about the efficacy of the medical model of dealing with mental health issues. I've been practising since 2011 and have a broad range of experience of dealing with many aspects of human distress and suffering including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, trauma, bereavement and loss, and problems in family and other relationships.

When life gets hard, it's easy to feel like you're all alone and not good enough. But you're not alone. There's nothing 'wrong' with you. Everyone struggles sometimes. I’ve met many people who felt hopeless about life, who turned their lives around, in ways that felt almost miraculous. I’ve found that people have more strength and wisdom than they realise. Together, in a warm, non-judgmental, and very safe, confidential environment, we can help you to re-discover that same wisdom and strength in yourself. I can help you understand, process, and work through the complex feelings that make life difficult.

I work with clients who are stuck and really want change in their lives, learning how to deal with unmanageable, unaccepted, or buried feelings. I take a creative approach to therapy both with talking and non-verbal communications, exploring what is said, what is not being said, as well as feelings and sensations in the body. I have extensive experience of creative work, and specialise in working with clients who express themselves ( or want to) through performance, music or any of the arts.

Welcome to my profile. I hope you find the support you need. For those who have taken that important step, I enjoy working alongside and celebrating with them when improvements in their mental health begin to show. This can involve getting to the root causes of symptoms, which is typically connected with 'what has happened to you'. We are shaped by our past, which is key to our understanding of 'self'. If talking about past events is triggering, we can focus on the feelings rooted in the past that play out in the present, and learn how to take back control of our emotions to live a better life.

Having worked with many clients over the years, I have a good understanding of what human distress looks like. Often, we try to push the difficult feelings (both physical and emotional) aside and just ‘get on with it’. Sure enough, it works for a while, but then there comes a point when the usual coping strategies just stop working, and reaching out for help feels somehow wrong too; life feels stuck in vicious circles. If this sounds frustratingly familiar, then you are not alone. With my extensive experience, I can support you to reach your goals, or simply to figure out together first what the goals might be.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
