I have been a counsellor since 2012, both in private practise and working for the YPC, Brighton, AGE UK and the YMCA/Wellbeing Service. As a humanistic/intergative therapist, I believe that you are the expert on yourself and I aim to provide the conditions which allow you to explore your motivations and themes, and make meaning from your own experience. I offer an empathic, non judgemental and respectful space. By building a relationship based on acceptance it becomes possible to look at, recognise and understand where problems in your life may have arisen. Counselling can be for anyone who feels lost, sad, lonely, confused.

I have spent the last 18 years studying human behaviour, relationships, and the workings of the mind – formerly in university teaching, research and support roles and now, as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor supporting individuals and couples with psychological, emotional and relationship difficulties. My focus is on the whole person rather than solely addressing specific symptoms or issues, which means our therapeutic process will consider all parts of you, mind, body, spirit and soul, as well as the social and cultural aspects of your experience.

As a therapist and midwife I understand the barriers you might feel asking for help during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth or postnatally). Many people struggle to talk about their anxiety, depression or doubts and worries about being a parent. You might feel judged or that you have failed in some way and there can be a real sense of pressure to feel positive throughout, making it sometimes feel really hard to admit you are struggling, so I understand just how significant asking for help is. Reaching out is positive and is the first step towards recovery - of your sense of self, your self worth and your wellbeing.

Welcome! I’m Jess, a clinical psychologist specialising in self-esteem, mood and anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, and perinatal wellbeing. My passion lies in offering compassionate and gold-standard therapies, working from the philosophy that we are all doing our best to survive at any given time. I understand that as adults we have often developed strategies that helped us cope with adversities in the past, but have come to keep us stuck in distress. I help people to understand the life stories and the amazing ways they have learned to survive, to understand their triggers and stuck patterns, and move towards new ways.

I firmly believe that the therapeutic relationship is the main vessel of real change. Therapy is a journey to be embarked safely, and it can help you to deal with your pain. Together, we can try to explore that pain or uncertainty that hinders the possibility you have to live a full and meaningful life. We will work together towards your objectives; it doesn't matter how far they seem now or how painful is to think about them.

Whether you are overwhelmed with your work/life balance and feeling like you have no time to stop, living with hurt, experienced a loss or feel ready to process past thoughts, behaviours or feelings. I can sit alongside you; not a ‘me and you’ but as equals and offer a non judgemental, confidential, and safe space to navigate these feelings and take that next 2nd step but at your pace as you feel ready.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
