My clients are at the heart of every session, creating a welcoming, safe and relaxed atmosphere where communication can flow freely and openly. The most important thing is that you are comfortable, at ease and feel able to talk. I aim to help you see your challenges more clearly and to face the problems with less anxiety and tension. It can be an opportunity to think and speak your truth without fear of judgement. I am trained to incorporate techniques associated with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Guided Visualisation, Psycho-dynamic Therapy and Transactional Analysis amongst others into my work.

My work is undertaken within a spiritual framework. I am able to offer a safe place where you can be heard, thus enabling you to look at issues, feelings and emotions. I will give you the support and clarity you require to empower you to make the changes in your life you feel you’d like to make. I am able to work in a creative way this can often help when you feel that word are just not enough to express what you are feeling. I am able to work not only with the problem on top but also with any underlying problem or pattern of behavior you may wish to change.

Identifying the thoughts, feelings and inner struggles that are holding you back can be daunting, but my role is to walk alongside you, enabling you to find clarity, calm, and good mental health. Central to my counselling ethos is the importance of creating a safe, non-judgemental place, where you are free to be yourself, and to explore any aspect of life that is important to you.

My work deals universally with the reduction of suffering, your suffering. Specifically this may include Depression, Anxiety, Low Mood, Loss of purpose, Grief, Relationship issues, managing change and family problems. Often we can be lost in our thinking and we can swing, like a pendulum, between worries of the past and anxieties of the future, never really pausing to be present now. This is normal, we all have these times. However sometimes, some of us get stuck in these places and need some guidance to bring us into balance and offer us support,at difficult times in our lives.

I provide a range of evidence based psychotherapies to alleviate psychological distress in Devon, my main approach being Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy is a highly effective form of psychodynamic psychotherapy designed to help you get to the heart of the matter quickly, and resolve issues fast. The approach is emotion focussed; a relational therapy that can address a wide range of ongoing problems or symptoms. ISTDP is particularly useful in attending to internal conflicts that can arise from interpersonal relationships.

It can feel very daunting when you are looking for a counsellor to help you on your journey of exploring your emotions. Its a big step and a commitment to find someone whom you can connect with and trust to share your worries, unpacking some of your emotional baggage. For some the process can feel difficult especially if you havnt had any experience of talking therapy before, a chance for your voice to be heard in a safe space by someone who wont judge you can be the assurance I can provide. Simply talking to someone who isn't part of the family or a friend can feel easier somehow. Counselling is a process that we learn to trust.

I believe that life is a gift; yet, at times, it can feel quite the opposite. Sometimes, we can feel overwhelmed by our difficulties. Often, a trained, non-judgmental and objective ear can help order one's thoughts, challenge ingrained patterns of behaviour, and manage emotions.

I mostly work with clients who have been adversely affected by abuse, trauma, and relationship difficulties. I have extended this to work with couples and relationships. I work by tuning into each client’s individual circumstances and listen to how their life experiences have impacted them. I can offer some solutions, such as coping mechanisms for managing trauma responses such as anxiety and depression. I also offer help in developing practical skills in managing narcissistic behaviour, such as carefully considered boundary setting, recognising that boundaries often come with negative consequences.

Choosing a therapist can be daunting, especially when you may be feeling anxious, depressed, confused, or at a low point. Maybe you're thinking how can anyone understand. If you’ve had no experience of working with a counsellor, or previous counseling wasn't what you expected or were ready to continue, I understand this can be difficult. I work with the complexity and difficulty of trauma which ranges from person to person.

I have worked in the NHS for over 20 years and I realise that therapy can be a new and unusual approach for people. I often work with folk who are finding things hard, and need a neutral form of support. I can offer direct support, teaching and practice in cognitive and behavioural techniques, or relaxation and mindfulness ideas to help. The goals that a person wants to work towards might be crystal clear to them, or they might refine these as we work together.

Clients come to me when they are experiencing distress in their relationships, with their sex lives or within themselves. Whether they are seeking help in processing a string of messy break-ups, exploring alternative relationship such as polyamory or intimacy styles such as kink and BDSM, dealing with cheating, shame or regret, or suffering from low self-esteem and feeling stuck, I listen, reflect, and support my clients, using positive regard without judgement. I can also help with identifying unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns, eating disorders and self-harm recovery.

Hello, I'm Basia Louise. I'm an experienced Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Humanist/Clinical Supervisor and a member of BACP with a private practice in Newton Abbot. I believe one of the most important aspect in counselling, is first, in choosing the person you'll do your best work with and then in the building of that theraputic relationship of trust. I offer an open, caring, safe and non judgemental space where I help people get to the root of what is causing their problems and support them in discovering ways to change their lives for the better.

What do you need to get your life on track, to feel fulfilled, relevant, in control and in the drivers seat? Sometimes we just need a bit of support to get there, an outside eye, a gentle challenge. We always need, and deserve to be treated with sensitivity, respect and dignity. Life is full of challenges, but you don't need to face them alone. Letting someone in can be scary, but you really do deserve to be supported, and you have every right to live a fulfilling, rich and creative life.

Counselling can seem a challenge if you have never sought this kind of help before, but my aim at the outset is to provide the beginnings of a therapeutic relationship which can open the door to an exploration of experience of the past, as well as the present. The aim of therapy can be specific, or obscure, but together we will work towards an achievable goal. I work intuitively, but with firm boundaries which keep us both safe within a very special relationship. Therapy can be long term, or short term, but it is the client who decides what number of sessions is going to be most beneficial.

As well as online video apps, I work face to face with adults, young people (11+) and couples. Sometimes friends or family are unable to support you so an impartial professional can really help. Powerlessness, change, loneliness, grief and anxiety are just a few of the overwhelming feelings many are experiencing. There is no need to be alone in this. Call for a chat to see if, together, we can find a way forward.
