I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor with a broad range of experience working with young people and adults. The approach I use allows me to move freely between modalities while adapting and bringing together relevant elements according to individual needs and requirements. I believe the essence of my role is the therapeutic relationship between the client and me, developing a trusting relationship within the counselling session is essential. I involve the use of empathy, non-judgment, and authenticity. This alongside confidentiality creates a safe environment for the client and I to work together.

Hello, I'm Deborah. Sometimes, we realise we need some support to cope with how we feel, but we may think it is too small to mention, or that it would be too much to share. You might be working through relationship, work or family challenges? Perhaps, you are feeling low, but not quite sure why? Just having someone to listen and support you in a non-judgmental way can help with perspective and recognising patterns or coping mechanisms. I have much experience in helping clients with anxiety, depression, stress, loss, sexual abuse, traumatic events, relationship issues or family conflicts.

As we begin to emerge from this challenging time, many relationships will be feeling the strain. Couple or individual counselling, either face to face or online can make such a difference, as we explore concerns and find effective ways forward.

I also work with a domestic violence agency, counselling women who have experienced childhood trauma, sexual abuse, anxiety/panic, low self-esteem, and PTSD.
I have come to counselling and psychotherapy as my second career after spending over 25 years in the corporate sector as part of the human resources function for global technology companies. My desire and ability to connect with people combined with a quest to find deeper meaning in my work led me to retrain and find my true vocation. I have navigated challenging life experiences and have grown and found peace through my own personal therapy. I’m versatile in my clinical approach, drawing from a rich theoretical foundation having trained as an Integrative Psychotherapist.

I work with adults and children/young people who are struggling with grief, anxiety or low self-esteem. Does that sound like you or your young person? I can help. Together we can be curious about what is troubling you - we can identify coping strategies or perhaps look more deeply into root causes. I use a range of theoretical approaches (e.g person centred, psychodynamic, attachment theory) to meet your individual needs. What matters most is the therapeutic relationship between client (you) and counsellor (me).

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
