Life can feel overwhelming and too much, and you want help. You might be struggling with anxiety, depression, a bereavement, low self-esteem, family issues, or many other problems. I have seen time and again that counselling can be an excellent tool in maintaining and improving your mental health. Many of my clients attest to feeling different after our sessions. Such as a sense of feeling calmer even after an introductory call, or first session. Some clients have found they sleep better after a few sessions, or have reduced panic attacks. Some clients spiral less, feel more in control of their life or may feel more confident.

Hi. My name's Mike. I know that feeling misunderstood while dealing with anxiety, low self-esteem, or depression can be incredibly difficult, and it's natural to compare yourself with others and worry if you're struggling with self-doubt. Whilst you might be frustrated because you can't stop overthinking and trying to please others, I understand that discomfort as a healthy longing for love and connection - but almost too much to bear. Could it be that what you want is peace, too? I know that many people relax when talking to someone impartial like me and naturally find alternative ways of seeing their situation or difficulty.

Do the 'what if's' and 'shoulds' run through your head constantly, leaving you feel stuck, anxious and adrift? Does your inner critic talk down to you, leaving you never feeling good enough? Perhaps you feel like you're tired and burnt out, always looking after others and living up to their expectations rather than putting yourself first. Do you find yourself looking for approval and validation from others, that you should 'be perfect' Maybe you just feel a bit lost and uncertain in this changing post pandemic world?

I work in a person-centred manner which means that I value building a positive relationship with clients; working to create a safe and comfortable therapeutic environment. This means that I want you to feel able to talk and express yourself about anything that may be troubling you. We talk about whatever you chose, and you can do so without fear of judgement. This enables you to become more comfortable with things as you discuss your thoughts freely, giving you an opportunity to consider things from different perspectives and over time building your confidence to explore different options and possibilities that are open to you.

Confronting your mental health, accepting you need support and reaching out for help is a courageous step. I completely understand that the first step can be daunting and we will work together at a pace that suits you. I will spend as much time as you need explaining how I work and the methods I use. Your initial consultation will be about us getting to know each other, the emotions you’re experiencing; how they make you feel and how they are affecting your life and well-being. We will complete an assessment together which will allow an individually tailored treatment programme to be planned specifically for you.

There are many reasons why you may wish to speak with a counsellor but a desire for some ‘change’ is usually present within our clients. There may be something about you which is being carried from past experiences, feelings about yourself such as low self-worth, or anxiety brought on by relationships with others or circumstances surrounding you which seem to be prevailing an assault on you. You may be suffering from depression or, fears which are seemingly taking control of you. I am trained in Trauma Therapy. Addictions or obsessions are also common reasons for our working with clients.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Clinical evidence based Mindfulness, aimed at effective treatment of most psychological issues. I am an Expert Witness and do court work (especially trauma).I aim to get desired results quickly (I am not a fan of long term therapy, but do offer long term support, if needed). I believe action oriented client, centered therapy works better than just "active listening, "which clients often find frustrating. Empowering people to help themselves is useful and reduces realiance on a therapist, I aim to make myself redundant and not needed by a client. Remote therapy works really well in my experience.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
