Hi, I’m an accredited Psychotherapeutic Counsellor (UKCP/ MBACP) with a specialism of working with children, young people and adult clients. I am trained in EMDR (Masterclass) and have many years experience working with children and families within settings, such as schools, hospices, charities, clinical settings, LAC teams and in the community – Like Violet Oaklander says ‘Play can be a serious business’. I am a hu manistic, ‘integrative’ practitioner, so I use different methods to develop a warm, friendly relationship based on individual needs, respect and accepting the person as a whole – in other words - ‘I’m Ok – You’re Ok’.

Let’s face it, life can be hard. To tackle the challenges we endure day-to-day, it’s essential to build a good psychological foundation and increase our fortitude. Without a balanced lifestyle our bodies and minds become less resilient. Are you struggling to move forward? My life philosophy is simple – be consistent and things will change for you. Work with me if you want to create healthier habits/behaviours and relinquish old beliefs that have weighed you down.

Whatever it is that brings you to counselling, I will help you to bring about the change you are wanting to achieve. You may have a personal goal in mind, or you may not know exactly what it is you need from counselling yet. You may be struggling with life at the moment and finding it hard to see a way forward. You may feel lost and not have a good sense of who you are any more. You may have a long term condition that you need help with or you may have had a recent bereavement, separation or other traumatic life event. Maybe things just don't feel right. Whatever it is you need and wherever you need to get to, I am here to help you.

My practice is for those who want to deepen their relationship with themselves and honour their soul's wisdom. Many struggle with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and intrusive thoughts, feeling trapped and unable to move forward with a life of meaning and purpose. I understand these struggles, having faced them myself. With no guidance available, I embarked on a personal journey of self-discovery to change this. Over 10 years of study, retreats, and consistent effort, I learned that healing isn’t just about moving from 'A' - 'B.' It’s about becoming aware of and accepting your reality, then using it as a catalyst for change.

As a person-centred therapist I don’t see clients as a collection of symptoms, traumas and anxieties, nor do I see myself as having ‘all the answers’. Instead I believe my clients already hold these keys, but they can be lost, confused or alone. It is my job to work alongside them as another hu man being who deeply listens and cares. I came to counselling through my own struggles in life and I know how important it is to really connect with the person you’re sharing your journey with. My work with clients avoids judgment and shame; instead I seek to provide a warm and supportive space for us to sit alongside each other.

Working together to reestablish and embolden a sense of value and trust in yourself allows you to move towards increasing clarity and a clearer sense of choice, enabling you to better meet your own needs whilst balancing the de mands and challenges of everyday life.
If you're feeling confused, overwhelmed or anxious, are struggling to gain clarity on how to move forwards right now, and want to find your next steps, I can help you. It can be difficult to make sense of our experience - our mind's a busy place at the best of times, and especially so when we find ourselves pulled along by strong currents of confusion or over-thinking, stress, anxiety, and worse. Asking for help with our difficulties can feel like a huge step, a last resort perhaps as we struggle to find the solutions we need to move forwards.

I have built up hundreds of hours in practice with people of all ages and backgrounds, helping them come to terms with a wide range of issues such as trauma, abuse, bereavement, relationship breakdown, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, isolation, body dysmorphia, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and sexual identity. Nature and my place in the environment have always been deeply important to me, and I am happy to consider outdoor and walking therapy. I also have a long-standing interest in existentialism, believing that we all have the capacity to create meaning and find peace within us, no matter how chaotic or painful life is.

Prior to this I worked in a men’s mental health charity and other community health settings, so I have a diverse range of experience in the short time I have been a practising professional (4 years).
“People simply are not helped by advice. If they were, they wouldn’t have to come to a counsellor” — Carl Rogers I’m a big believer that people are the experts in themselves and that my role as a counsellor is to help facilitate that process of greater self-understanding. If there is something about yourself that has been giving you difficulty in life - repeating negative patterns for example - that you would like to change, then psychotherapy may be for you.

I believe in a whole-person approach to psychotherapy that equally values all aspects of the Hu man experience – body, feeling, mind, soul and spirit.
Hello - I'm Michael Blades, an Integrative, Relational Psychotherapist and full member of the UCKP and member of the BACP (MBACP). I understand how life can leave a lasting impression on how we come to think and feel about ourselves as adults. Psychotherapy can help you change your sense of self and your relationships with others and the world. I often work with motivated and courageous clients who realise they are not just the stories they have come to believe about themselves - and, in time, reconnect with a more profound sense of who they are and have meaning in their lives.

Many therapies only deal with specific themes or specific ways of working. The therapists limit can limit the effectiveness of your unique journey of healing. My unique holistic method "tuning in" honed over 8 years specialises in being open to you to explore the whole creative range of what's available whilst healing. If welcomed, we can explore breathwork, vocal work, somatic work, movement/dance, philosophy, imagination and dreams, psychodrama, nature work as well as talk therapy; making therapy much more effective and more enjoyable in working through the pains and mysteries of this life we find ourselves in.

Many people over the years have said how profoundly their therapy has changed their lives.
I work with individuals who are struggling with all kinds of issues, such as depression, anxiety and stress, questions of identity, personality problems, relationship issues, bereavement, addictions, abuse, anger management and many other difficulties. Sometimes problems can be difficult to articulate, like feeling lost, confused, or like something just isn’t right. Often we can face problems that feel so ingrained that we might feel there can’t be a solution. We might feel ‘it’s just who I am’. I am also an experienced couples therapist. Most fights between couples are rooted in the pain of loosing connection with each other.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
