People come to talk to me for lots of reasons. Sometimes there is a defined problem, it may be longstanding or recent; it may be related to a life event or something upcoming that is raising anxiety; there may be questions or difficulties in some key relationships, or at work; it may not be clear at all, but you are experiencing unease and wish to get to the bottom of why. Coming to talk to a trained and registered psychotherapist guarantees a secure, safe and confidential space in which to explore any or all of the above, alone, as a couple or in a family group.

Hi, I am Clare, a compassionate, warm, friendly, and professional integrative relational psychotherapist. I work alongside clients in a respectful, empowering, non-judgemental way, to deepen understanding, identify choices and enable change. I believe that our early relationships and experiences have a profound impact on how we feel and behave, and on what we believe about ourselves and the world around us. Having counselling will enable you to rediscover yourself in a safe place, where you can go at your own pace and allow yourself to release your true emotions that you may have locked away but are causing anxiety or distress.

I am interested in why you are seeking counselling; you may wish to describe any previous experiences of counselling you have had. You may wish to express what you feel your current support systems include- such as family and friends- and think about what you would like to achieve through therapy. If we decide to work together, we can agree a mutually convenient way to engage. I view entering into a therapeutic relationship as an act of bravery and a leap of faith. Building trust in our relationship is a journey I never underestimate and a privilege that I never take for granted.

Reaching out can be difficult. Maybe you feel stuck, anxious, unsettled, lost your way, or uncomfortable with whom you have become. The difficulties within our lives can change who we are or how we see the world. It can lead to thoughts or behaviours that take us away from who we are, resulting in a feeling of something not being right, struggling to cope or to make sense of things. When entering therapy, our life experiences enter too, and healing occurs within the processing. We will work together to build trust and explore your emotions and thoughts within a non-judgemental and safe environment, working at your own pace.

Often our anxieties and difficulties can weigh us down and we are unable to find a way forward. Our thoughts and feelings can be confusing and talking to friends and relatives about our concerns may be too difficult. I provide a confidential, safe, respectful and non-judgemental space in which you can explore your difficulties, gain insight and discover a way forward. I provide a counselling relationship where you are heard, understood and accepted. This is extremely powerful because it allows you to open up and express all of your thoughts and feelings and gain a new awareness which leads to the potential for positive change.

Hi, my name is Jessica Jeffrey. Clients usually call me Jess. I’m a Counsellor and Psychotherapist and I see adult clients with a wide range of difficulties. I believe every person deserves to receive respect and kindness, and to have someone to talk to. Ordinary every-day life can be painful and exhausting, but we can seek relief through therapy to improve mood, restore clarity and usher in calm. I see clients face to face in central Ilkley (next to Bettys, upstairs) on Thursdays and Fridays, or online on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

My past experience as an operational firefighter for 20years has moulded my approach to life. I offer a non-judgemental safe place for the client to explore any issues they may have. A particular area of interest for me is the effect of a difficult past on the psyche, whether childhood or later life trauma . I use an integrated method of therapy which enhances my ability to help the client make the changes they desire. I am friendly and empathic with first hand appreciation of the challenges we all face.

Perhaps you are finding life difficult at the moment and you would value help to find your way through being 'stuck'. Life can sometimes lead to emotional difficulties, feelings of stress, which affect our relationships or work. Counselling offers the opportunity to talk through your thoughts and feelings, helping you identify, explore and understand what doesn’t feel right within. The issues you are facing might be leading to low self-esteem, confusion, depression, addiction, suicidal thoughts or self-harm. Counselling can help you develop internal resources, and alternative ways of thinking to help you move forward in your life.

Do you feel despair or a growing distance in your relationship no matter what you do? Are you struggling to communicate with your partner? My clients often tell me they miss warmth & affection and wish they could turn back the clock to happier times. Perhaps your partner had an affair and you're both scared and don't know what to do now. Either way, one thing's for sure: you’re desperate for some relief. It might be hard to imagine your relationship could be full of fun and laughter again but this has happened with my clients. Together we can move you from anxiety and stuckness to feeling happy again.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
