I'm Julie, I offer counselling and support for life changes and transitions big and small, particularly family life and parenting. Is life getting on top of you, leaving you overwhelmed and anxious, but unable to see a way out of the current chaos and fog? Are you feeling constantly exhausted, sad. tearful, inadequate, unable to concentrate and make decisions, and not finding much joy in anything? Or has a traumatic experience left you feeling on-edge, with flashbacks and trapped in a cycle of depression, anger and guilt? Or perhaps you are spotting some 'red flags' in a relationship and and are worried about how healthy it is?

I came to counselling later in life, after running my own successful business in the hospitality and events industry. I have a lot of experience in dealing with different people and situations, and I understand the pressures and challenges of working in a demanding and competitive field. I have also faced my own struggles with complicated family issues growing up, identity and self worth. These experiences have shaped me as a person and as a therapist, and they help me to connect with a diverse range of clients.

Life...Relationships...Work.... I partner with individuals and couples who want a place to reflect and make sense of their current difficulties so that they can get back on track. I offer a friendly, down to earth, research backed approach both online and face to face. I can provide counselling, psychotherapy and coaching, or a combination as determined by your unique needs. I start from the perspective that people make sense i.e. their behaviour and what they are experiencing have meaning that can be understood in the context of their history and their current life context.

Living life is not only about being able to absorb the ups and downs, it is also about growing from them too. Yet there may be times when we are unable to grow; unable to live in a way that allows us to feel at our best and get the most from each present moment. It is at these times that it may be useful to speak to a professional counsellor; someone who can know you differently to the way a friend or family member might and who can accept all of who you are safely, honestly and without judgement.

You may be finding life difficult or painful. This may be due to a relationship problem or something that you experienced in the past. You may feel you can barely cope with the demands and responsibilities of life. You may be suffering from low mood or a general sense of dissatisfaction. You may feel a sense of bereavement or loss. Perhaps you are aware of being angry a lot of the time. You could have noticed patterns of behaviour in your life and you wonder why. You may feel you have issues connected with spirituality or religion. These feelings and thoughts can be explored in the safety and containment of counselling.

People often find counselling useful when they are struggling to make sense of difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences they are encountering. I offer a safe and non-judgmental space in which an individual can explore their life in their own personal way, as a means of finding deeper understanding; balance and to strengthen their resolve. Whilst being a counsellor I have experience working within the Ministry Of Justice for 18+ years delivering Therapeutic Groups for both men and women who have entered the Criminal Justice System.

Men's Issues Counsellors

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
