I qualified as a clinical psychologist 24 years ago and have experience of working with people across the age span, particularly within adult mental health and child and adolescent mental health. People consult me about a range of situations and problems, for example; anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns, relational and family distress, grief, loss, trauma, abuse, chronic illness and work related difficulties. My aim is to work alongside you to empower you to respond to the problems you are facing in ways that are in keeping with your values and preferences.

I offer a specialist clinic for people struggling with their relationship with food and body image. You may have been diagnosed with an eating disorder, be struggling with anxiety or depression and using food as a coping mechanism or just instinctively know that your relationship with food is unhealthy and have a wish to explore this. I have been working in this field for over 17 years, supporting local families, adolescents and adults through a variety of eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, ARFID) and aim to accompany individuals and families as they navigate their recovery journey.

Hi. My name is Dan. Most of us seem to spend lots of our time thinking (or maybe worrying?) about our past, or envisioning our future. The difficult truth however is that in actuality the only genuine experience of life we can have is here, now, in the present moment. When we talk about our thoughts and feelings, our relationship to them changes. It's not magic. My role is simply to listen to you with compassion, without judgement, and perhaps help you to hear yourself differently, in the “safe space” of a confidential and (when it works) unique relationship. You are and can only ever possibly be the greatest expert on you.

I offer short and long term therapy for young people and adults experiencing a range of emotional and psychological difficulties such as family and relationship dynamics, stress and anxiety, grief and loss, chronic pain, life transitions and historic trauma. You may be feeling stuck in familiar patterns which make you feel vulnerable, afraid or alone causing feelings of emotional overwhelm and confusion without resources to help you cope with daily life. I understand we consider therapy when it feels no longer possible to resolve difficulties and life challenges alone. With warmth, kindness and curiosity, I am here to help.

I have worked as a counsellor, psychotherapist and coach for almost 20 years so I have gained a very broad experience of people's issues and needs. I work with individuals and couples. I offer help and guidance into how we become more comfortable with who we are, where we come from and what we desire from our lives in the future....how we fit into the World. This may be as an individual or as part of a couple relationship. I find that anxiety and stress affect so many people in their working and private lives - especially presented with the challenges of trying to live happily in an immense city such as London.

In these uncertain times we have been given a unique opportunity that we must not waste to re-evaluate what is important and meaningful in our lives. Do you want to be able to identify those areas of your life that need careful reflection and examination in order to make the best decisions possible going forward for your wellbeing and then implement those decisions?

We each have the potential for happiness and confidence but sometimes life can feel stressful or relentlessly tough. We may struggle with complex anxiety, have experienced trauma, depression, confusion, fear, anger, grief or feeling stuck. Through counselling it is possible to recover and gain confidence and the skills to move forwards with a greater sense of wellbeing.I appreciate the courage it can take to engage in counselling, and how helpful it is to speak to someone who is not a family member or friend. Through this professional relationship we work together to safely explore and resolve any difficult feelings and experiences.

Are you in emotional pain, feeling alienated or dislocated from other people? Do you feel stuck or wish that you could have more satisfying, less stressful relationships? Perhaps your fears and worries prevent you from realising your potential. I work alongside people to help understand the reasons behind such thoughts and feelings. In coming to understand the patterns of your life, and the confusing and painful feelings that accompany them, you can begin to make consciously informed choices about how to live. This leads to a more authentic and less critical experience of yourself, opening the way for greater enjoyment in life.

OUTDOOR 1 is 15-20 minutes from Falmouth, Truro & Redruth. Option 2 is Helston. How messy is your bag? Do you feel guilt, shame, anxiety or stress when you sneak a peak? Do you self-attack, self-criticise, self-doubt or self-blame? How about we tip out the contents and look together from a perspective of kindness and compassion, no matter what might be inside? Sifting through at your own pace, looking curiously at your 'stuff'. What leads you to emotional unrest & negative thinking and what will bring forth a sense of certainty, self-assurance & positive thoughts.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
