My areas of specialist training are in childhood trauma, childhood sexual abuse, sexual violence, eating disorders, personality disorders and abusive relationships.
Hi there, my name is Ellie and I am a Counsellor specializing in trauma and the common coping skills that develop from it's effects. These include the areas of disordered eating, body image issues (including body dysmorphia), addiction (self-medicating to avoid the effects of trauma), being drawn to abusive relationships and patterns of becoming stuck and paralyzed in these damaging dynamics. The heart of my therapeutic work is to help clients discover their authentic self and to gently dis-engage from painful old beliefs they may have internalized from complex and overwhelming environments.

Some of the sexual problems I help with are; erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, painful intercourse, loss of desire, fear or avoidance of sex, sexual problems related to health, problems with arousal and impact of sexual abuse.
Sometimes we all need additional support to navigate difficult times and making a decision to seek help for our personal problems can be daunting. I believe in creating a safe space to work together, where you are the expert in your own experiences and I have the experience and expertise in psychological theories and techniques. I believe that by bringing together this expertise we can work together to enable you to achieve your unique personal goals. Some of the relationship problems I work with include communication issues, affairs and betrayals, family issues, parenting issues, separation and divorce.

I have a special interest in working with trauma (childhood trauma, sexual abuse, domestic violence).
Living with the impact of trauma and PTSD can make it difficult to feel safe enough to connect with others. The lasting impacts of trauma can negatively affect our mood, relationships, physical health and self esteem. Ongoing mental health difficulties can prevent us from being the person we want to be, and living the life we want to live. I offer a calm and compassionate space where you can feel safe to reflect on the experiences you have been through. We will work together to understand what has helped you to survive so far, and how to work towards a better future.

Do you need someone to listen? Do you feel you’re not heard or seen? Do you feel misunderstood, to blame, angry, sad, anxious, disillusioned? Is family life, work or other relationships getting too much to cope with? Throughout life, we are often left with feelings of low self worth, anger, sadness or may feel powerless. We can become confused about who we are, what we need and where life is taking us. This accumulation over many years blinds us to who we really are and sometimes we need help to find out. I believe I can help you.

We are all able to agree that our physical health is variable, but it may be much harder to admit that our psychological health is in constant flux. All too often, we find ourselves buying into the idea of the "stiff upper lip": that "mental health issues" affect only other people - and "weak people", at that! It can be very daunting, therefore, to recognise that we need help and then to take steps to find a professional who will help things improve. I understand those concerns, because I've been there: and I also have experience of the positive effects of psychotherapy - from both sides of the consulting-room!

Hello. I’m Luke and as a therapist, I fully believe that change is possible. I am a contemporary therapist, who keeps up to date with modern techniques. Whatever your notion or experience of therapy may be, I promise that you will be working with a human being, who has human experiences. Life can be lonely, frustrating and unpredictable. It can often chew us up and spit us out. We all have our unique ways of experiencing the world around us; but being heard and understood are two of our most basic needs.

We all face challenges in our lives and it is a normal part of being human to experience low mood, self-critical thoughts, stress, anxiety and self-doubt. If you are at a point in your life where you want to make changes, understand how you have learnt to cope with life and discover new perspectives and responses that will improve your self-esteem and overall wellbeing then we can make a great team.

Sometimes life can be difficult or challenging. Maybe you are struggling with feelings such as sadness, anxiety, anger, depression, stress, worry, guilt, or shame? Perhaps something has particularly knocked you sideways, your usual means to cope with life’s challenges no longer suffice or not the solution? Or do you find yourself feeling lost or empty, or caught up in a cycle of thinking or behaving that is affecting your emotional well being or making life, work or relationships difficult? Have you and your partner got into stuck ways of relating? Is this leaving you feeling hurt, sad or lonely? Are you hurting the ones you love?

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
