My name is Ingrid Coombs. I am I C Counselling specialising in the field of trauma which, I believe is an event or events combined with all the feelings and emotions associated with it, which now negatively impact your life. Trauma affects people in many different ways. Only you will know how your experience is affecting you and whether or not you are struggling to cope as a result. I also work in the field of addiction, helping those already in recovery examine their journey which took them there. This can encompass past behaviours, relationships, adverse childhood experiences, leading to depression and anxiety and low self worth.

Modern life brings many challenges – each of us meets these in our own unique way. Occasionally, problems feel insurmountable or a strategy may not be working. We may experience sleep loss, irritability, mood changes such as anger or even feel unwell. When our mental health is compromised, it can be as debilitating as a physical health issue. Counselling and coaching are powerful ways to take control. Counselling can help you discover your goals and find your own path.

Should I talk to someone about this? If you have found yourself on this page, it is likely that you have had this thought. Perhaps you have experienced a distressing event or betrayal or have lost the passion in your relationship. Perhaps you are looking for help as a couple or as an individual. Whatever the reason you are seeking help, reaching out is always a brave step. It is helpful to know what to expect.

If you are struggling and finding life difficult or distressing in any way, then counselling could help you find clarity about your situation and find a way of moving forward. I can offer you a safe space to talk about your situation, explore your thoughts and feelings, and process things in your past and present. In turn, you can gain greater self-awareness, feel more in control and resilient, and improve your general wellbeing.

We all go through periods in our life where we feel sad, anxious or overwhelmed by our difficulties and struggle to find a way forward. Perhaps you are going through a life transition, relationship breakdown or feeling stuck and lost as to how to make changes? Often these feelings can be linked to experiences from our childhood. Unlocking this can help make sense of what we are experiencing in the present. I can help you move forward by giving space and support to work through these feelings, make links and look at any challenges you face from a different perspective.

I have experience in a range of mental health areas such as; anxiety, depression, self-confidence and identity.
Everyone is different and counselling is not a 'one size fits all' approach. Managing life's difficulties thrown upon us can be challenging in many ways, but I will be alongside you every step of the way. Through our relationship I will help you unravel your thoughts and feelings but I ask for self-compassion; it may be bumpy.

Experience of working with depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, bereavement and stress.
Sometimes it can feel as if nobody understands us or our challenges. I wonder if a particular change, loss or relationship has left you disconnected from others? Perhaps you are facing a crossroads, feeling stuck or uncertain? If you are experiencing a sense of prolonged anxiety, low mood or find yourself trying to navigate through a mixture of unsettling thoughts, taking the time to share your story in a safe space may help you find a way forward. I endeavour to provide a supportive listening relationship to enable you to explore aspects of your life causing worry, sadness or stress.

You might feel worried about opening up and unsure if you want to uncover past hurts.
Looking for a counsellor for the first time can be daunting. However, suffering ongoing emotional pain is miserable. We are all entitled to lead a fulfilling life. Maybe you have a specific issue, or maybe you or aren't sure what is wrong , but you feel low or anxious. I have 20 years' experience of working in the mental health field, and set up my practice as a counsellor in 2014. I work with adults of all ages and young adults (16-18). Talking to a professional who is not involved, that you can trust, who is not going to judge can help you to make sense of what is happening for you.

I have worked successfully with anxiety including phobias, ocd, social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder and panic disorder.
I work in 3 main ways: 1. Gently: I can help you begin a journey of understanding yourself and introduce you to therapy tools and get you back to feeling like you again. 2. We delve deeper, I can help you heal from a broken relationship either recent or long ago that is holding you back. You must be ready to do this deep work as you will release a lot of stored emotion. 3. I also work with young people (12-17yrs) helping them understand their emotions and teaching them tools and tricks to manage life. You choose which level you want to work at, but our discussions are wrapped with warmth, fun and need to know truths.

I have supported clients going through a range of problems, with a lot of experience working with: anxiety, depression, relationship troubles both platonic and romantic, self-esteem and bereavement.
Our minds can be confusing places at times. Especially when it comes to issues of mental health. It may feel hard to talk about certain things with friends and loved ones for many reasons, and it can feel like there’s no way to escape these problems. I can offer you a safe, confidential space to help you make more sense of your situation, help you throw your problems into a new light and perhaps give you a new perspective on what’s going on for you. I work in a holistic way, which takes into account you as a whole person and not just a problem that needs to be treated.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about an increase in anxiety (GAD) and depression for many people, particularly those of school and college age.
I am an experienced and qualified counsellor working full time in my profession. It is very important to feel comfortable working with a counsellor with whom you have a relationship built upon trust, openness and honesty, where you feel at ease and accepted without judgement. I offer an initial free telephone consultation where we can discuss any queries you may have around counselling. This is important so we can identify together how therapy can be useful to you. I explain how I work and what you can expect from me. I work regularly with clients with a variety of issues including anxiety, low mood, family concerns & bereavement

I have been working for over 20 years with people who have a wide range of issues including, relationship and work problems, low self esteem, addictions and other forms of self harm, abuse, eating disorders, bereavement as well as people who suffer from stress and anxiety or feel low, depressed and suicidal. I am also qualified to work with couples and groups about relationships. Most of my training and work as a counsellor has been about really learning to listen to people, hearing the ‘music’ behind their words and sensing their deepest feelings, hurts, joys and fears as it is then that therapeutic healing can occur.

Feeling Stuck? Not sure what to do next or what that may look like? Counselling can help by exploring the current presenting issue and reasons for its presence in the moment, with some past focus and exploration of the impact of the issue for you coming to therapy. I work with what you need in the room as I believe you are the expert of what is going on and using this to inform the way we tailor support to overcome what has brought you to therapy. I use an array of techniques to suit your needs working with anxiety, stress, grief and loss, relationship issues and long term illness.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
