Most people at some point in their life experience emotional or relationship difficulties. These can be short term problems, as well as difficulties you may have been struggling with over a longer period of time. Counselling can offer a safe and confidential space to explore issues, develop a greater understanding of difficulties and to make sense of them.

We are all on our individual journeys and there are times when it can be helpful to share and talk through some of the issues that arise along the way. I can offer you a safe, confidential space in which you can begin to explore some of the issues you are facing. I can offer short or long term counselling, in person, online or on the telephone. I also offer a free initial session so that we can meet and decide whether we would like to work together with no obligation.

I work mainly with adults from all walks of life, all looking to find a more meaningful and fulfilling way of living. Whatever your issues are, together we will explore why you are feeling this way, and work towards change. We will look at what has led to your current issues and what it is you are looking for in order to create those changes. I have a lot of experience working not only face to face but also online and via phone. There is always a choice of a better way of feeling but we sometimes get stuck and unable to find a way forward alone. I can help you to untangle how you are feeling and clear the way for a new path.

You may be wondering if anyone can understand you. Right now you feel unheard, alone and misunderstood. There are times when you feel low or anxious, overwhelmed by the demands on you. You just want the people in your life to get it. Perhaps your relationships are unsatisfying, stuck in unhelpful patterns that you don’t know how to change. You want to be clear about your goals and how you can achieve them resulting in more satisfaction for you. Perhaps you need more effective communication with those close to you. You want to live the life you desire with a sense of purpose. Perhaps the time has come to take positive action.

Sometimes we may feel that everything we experience in life is difficult, challenging or simply doesn't make sense anymore. The amount of pressure we need to handle every day combined with all these repressed and unprocessed memories of things we never dealt with can easily lead to many psycho-physical issues. We all possess physical, mental/emotional and sexual healths. When our physical health needs attention, we go to see a doctor. Sadly, we often disregard the latter. We think we can handle it all, where in fact we are getting weaker, less resilient to adversities and prone to negative feelings & reactions.

I mostly work with clients who have been adversely affected by abuse, trauma, and relationship difficulties. I have extended this to work with couples and relationships. I work by tuning into each client’s individual circumstances and listen to how their life experiences have impacted them. I can offer some solutions, such as coping mechanisms for managing trauma responses such as anxiety and depression. I also offer help in developing practical skills in managing narcissistic behaviour, such as carefully considered boundary setting, recognising that boundaries often come with negative consequences.

I have lots of experience working with relationship issues, anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, abuse and work related problems. During our first meet we will discuss and agree how we can best work together, the frequency and duration of the therapy and desired outcome, whether that's just wanting to feel better in some way, or something more targeted. This will then form a kind of contract which we will base the work on whilst reviewing it periodically. Usually sessions will be held on a weekly basis during the same time slot each week. I integrate a range of different psychotherapeutic approaches subject to your needs.

Hello, I am really pleased you are here, it takes courage to seek change. I'm a State Registered and Accredited Art & EMDR Psychotherapist. I am trained to work with both adults and children; I see people of all ages in my online practice. You don't have to be good at art to do Art Therapy, it's another way of exploring and expressing that helps us view things from a different perspective. EMDR, a specialist trauma technique, blends really well within this work. I work with low self esteem and low mood, trauma (single incidents or complex) as well as issues such as anxiety, phobia and OCD. Therapy times often vary depending on need.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
