Most people at some point in their life experience emotional or relationship difficulties. These can be short term problems, as well as difficulties you may have been struggling with over a longer period of time. Counselling can offer a safe and confidential space to explore issues, develop a greater understanding of difficulties and to make sense of them.

I work mainly with adults from all walks of life, all looking to find a more meaningful and fulfilling way of living. Whatever your issues are, together we will explore why you are feeling this way, and work towards change. We will look at what has led to your current issues and what it is you are looking for in order to create those changes. I have a lot of experience working not only face to face but also online and via phone. There is always a choice of a better way of feeling but we sometimes get stuck and unable to find a way forward alone. I can help you to untangle how you are feeling and clear the way for a new path.

Life is overwhelming at times and it's just good to talk about what's going on. I like to work with you to find your own answers, to understand what is going on for you. We don't always know what we are thinking or feeling until we say it out loud. In order to do that you need to be able to trust who you are talking to. Nobody likes feeling judged or being told what to do!

I can help with many common troubles, such as anxiety, depression, pain, emotion regulation, self-worth, panic attacks, identity worries, family life, attachment, trauma, abuse and more. Many of the clients I have worked with needed help in seeing, accepting and loving their true self. Often these have been young people and adults with a divergent neurotype, whose feelings and authenticity have been masked for far too long.

I believe that life is a gift; yet, at times, it can feel quite the opposite. Sometimes, we can feel overwhelmed by our difficulties. Often, a trained, non-judgmental and objective ear can help order one's thoughts, challenge ingrained patterns of behaviour, and manage emotions.

I am committed to providing high quality psychotherapy to help people achieve real and lasting change. I help my clients move past whatever is in the way of them living the life they want, with compassion and integrity. We all have inherent potential to live a rich and fulfilling life. Buried feelings and unhelpful, habitual ways of thinking and behaving can block or limit this potential, and even our sense of who we are. This can lead to many distressing symptoms such as anxiety and depression, repeated problems in relationships, dissatisfaction in career, loneliness, chronic mind-body health problems.

Hello, I'm Basia Louise. I'm an experienced Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Humanist/Clinical Supervisor and a member of BACP with a private practice in Newton Abbot. I believe one of the most important aspect in counselling, is first, in choosing the person you'll do your best work with and then in the building of that theraputic relationship of trust. I offer an open, caring, safe and non judgemental space where I help people get to the root of what is causing their problems and support them in discovering ways to change their lives for the better.

My name is Heather Rosser. I know counselling can feel daunting, unknown and scary. When I first saw a therapist, I wondered if I was saying and doing the right things. Whatever brings you to counselling, we can explore together, there is nothing too small or too big, there is no right or wrong way, only your way. As your counsellor, I aim to be by your side, exploring what it must be like for you, from your perspective. I have a gentle manner demonstrating empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence, enabling clients to feel safe and comfortable exploring their feelings.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
