It can be a difficult thing to reach out to a counsellor. You may have been unhappy for a while - with your job, with your relationship, with the direction your life is taking. You know you want to make changes but it can seem like a huge task, and you have no idea where to start. You know there are things you need to do, parts of your past you need to face, self-esteem to build, destructive patterns that need to be broken. You may have had counselling before, you may have wanted to try it for a while, it may be a last resort. Whatever brings you to counselling, from whatever background, you are welcome to reach out.

Hi there, I'm Lauren and my biggest reason for doing what I do, is to empower others to believe in their own capabilities and worth. I aim to develop a professional friendship with those that I work with by offering a non-judgemental, cosy and discrete environment. I've built up my expertise through nine years of experience in the mental health sector and I have a specialism in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which is an evidence based therapy that focuses on thoughts, behaviours, feelings and beliefs.

Waitlist for new clients
Often clients contact me when other therapy has not helped them in the way they had hoped. This is often due to the complexity of difficulties being layered perhaps in a history of trauma. Distress in the body and mind can be triggered by what appears to be something superficial. This can open up the past or come at a time when our emotional resilience is low so this event has a greater impact than it may have done. We can find ourselves not being able to function in our normal way. Many clients often identify as 'good copers' and those who 'just get on with it'. Perhaps we can't now - this is frightening and can derail us.

People usually come to therapy because there is something they want to change. I offer a warm and friendly talking space where we can explore and identify what this is, using cognitive behaviour therapy ultimately to help you feel better. CBT is a talking therapy which helps people to understand more about how the way we think about ourselves, other people and the world, impacts on our feelings and actions. It is very practical and has lots of tools, techniques and ways of thinking about things. This can really help you to feel better, see things differently and make changes.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
