Do you need help to change your relationship with food? I've been a clinical psychologist for over 20 years. For the past 11 years, I've specialised in disordered eating (e.g. "emotional eating") and eating disorders (including binge eating disorder and bulimia), in addition to associated issues, such as anxiety, low mood, trauma, low self-esteem, poor body image, self-sabotaging behaviours, fear of change, and weight-related difficulties. I offer a safe, supportive space to help you better understand your relationship with food, yourself and others. I will help you work towards your goals at your own pace.

If you think something in your past is continuing to impact you in a negative way. If you are constantly being triggered, if you have tried other talking therapies and are still being triggered, likelihood is that you have unresolved trauma and need EMDR. I have seen remarkable results in my clients in just a few sessions to really shift the feelings often trapped in the body. The feelings that put us on edge, make us jumpy and things we can't stop dreaming about and that keep us awake. Getting rid of these symptoms is what people want. I have years of experience in helping people with this and have seen the difference it makes.

Whether you're seeking solutions for an immediate problem or wish to explore deeper patterns in your life, we'll collaborate to find a path that feels right for you. We can start by discussing what you hope to gain from counselling, and we can explore the best options to support you. You will never be under pressure to discuss anything you don't want to. First and foremost, a counsellor's job is to listen with empathy and understanding. Whether you're seeking a sounding board for difficult emotions, a partner in problem-solving, or simply a non-judgmental presence, I am here to support you in the way that feels most beneficial.

When relationships (business, family or personal) are troubled, we can feel anxious or depressed. Whether its lack of, ending of, difficulties with or changes in relationships, at work or home, our need for human closeness both brings pleasure and causes problems. Maybe change is driven by others, maybe you need something to change but don't know the best way to go about it. Perhaps you’re finding that you’re stuck in a destructive communication pattern and feel like you’re going round in circles. Maybe you don’t really know what you want, but would like to find out. I can help.

There are many reasons why you may be seeking out a therapist to help with the issues you face in your life. You may be experiencing distressing feelings; you may be approaching important crossroads in life and you’re faced with uncertainty; you may feel like your confidence or self-esteem is low. It may also be something more difficult to put your finger on – you may have an unnameable sense that something just isn’t right with your internal world and you want to make a change. You may be wondering what it is that I can do to help, so let's start there...

I am a Humanistic Integrative therapist, which means my "eclectic" style of therapy is adaptable to the individual. The integrative approach views the client as a whole and considers many different therapy styles and approaches to find what works for the individual, and appeals most to their personality and attachment style. I view my clients as people, not jargon, and an advocate for personal autonomy. I use many techniques but specialise in Transactional Analysis.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
