Attachment-based Counselling in Chard
Clients I see and work with bring a range of relational difficulties and traumas which present in very individual ways. Parents often feel judged when they are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances, and trust in others becomes unsafe. Children may struggle with anxiety, behavioural difficulties, withdraw, not trusting adults and feel isolated. Children want to feel safe and secure in their world with their family to thrive and flourish, and parents want to provide these for their children, but can find they need some support during difficult and challenging times in their lives.

Hi, I’m Emma. My areas of experience are in supporting people with anxiety, bereavement and loss, trauma-related feelings, and relationship issues. I am also interested in the long term effects of boarding school. I appreciate that finding someone to share your thoughts and emotions with can be a daunting task. I also understand the importance of feeling safe, heard and valued. As a humanistic counsellor I believe that finding solutions is most effective when achieved collaboratively. I also believe that life, past relationships and instinctive survival strategies, all play their part in how we think and what we do.

Sometimes in life we come across challenges that are too big to manage and cope with by ourselves. We can feel 'stuck' lost and isolated with our problems, unable to find a way forward. There could be a heavy weight of unhappiness and you are unable to pinpoint why. Past events could be affecting the way you are in the world today. Anxiety or depression may be holding you back from experiencing life and relationships in the way that you want to.

I am trained in a range of attachment-based therapeutic approaches (ISTDP, EMDR, CFT and DDP) and will tailor intervention to your needs, always putting our relationship at the center of our work.
As a Clinical & Educational Psychologist, I work with children and adults with a range of difficulties who want to improve their lives. Clients I see struggle with attachment trauma, anxiety, depression, physical symptoms and self-criticism. They often feel, anxious, drained, live with pain, gastro problems, phobias and/or PTSD,ADHD, or FND symptoms. Relationships are challenging, and trusting others to access help is a struggle. Through our work, we develop greater awareness of how they relate to others in intimate relationships, and the impact this has on their body and mind, which helps them relate to themselves differently too.

We work affirmatively with diversity, especially gender, sexual and relationship diversity; with couples, individuals and people in multi-partnered relationships, or engaged in BDSM and kink.

My ideal client is one of complexity; I plan on to enrol onto a Doctorate becoming a counselling psychologist. I am a qualified counsellor and my knowledge base started 15 years ago when I fell ill. I have had an eventful life, including heart problems, strokes and many other issues. Through therapies, self help and determination I am happy with my life and I would love to share my knowledge. I have specialised in complex bereavement over the past 6 years seeing clients face to face and supporting them through the hard times. There is a need for more LGBT counsellors that understand and help.

We can all feel overwhelmed at times: it might be the breakdown of a relationship, loss of a friendship, daily struggles or those horrible feelings of anxiety that just won’t go away. We might be feeling unhappy but we’re not sure why, we might feel life isn’t going the way we want it to whilst everyone else seems to be doing ok. Talking openly and feeling truly heard can be life changing: we can say all those things that keep going round in our heads, the issues that keep coming back time and again, and work towards understanding what’s going on, make changes and find some peace. Isn't that what we all want and deserve?

my work is guided by the belief that psychotherapy should be a safe, confidential and regular space in which to talk about feelings, experiences and difficulties, with a therapist you have developed a trusting therapeutic relationship with over time. Understanding how past experiences and relationships can impact on current difficulties can help a person better cope in the future. I provide a warm, empathic and safe proffessional service.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
