Relationships can at times be a great source of distress and anxiety; sometimes it’s easy to feel stuck and unable to move forwards. You may be having difficulties with communication, infidelity, intimacy, sexual difficulties, or perhaps you just can’t seem to get along anymore and you’re not sure why. Whether you are experiencing difficulties within your relationship, or find it difficult to form lasting relationships, counselling can give you the space you need to explore and understand these issues. I offer sex therapy and relationship/couple counselling from my base in Canterbury (Kent) and online.

Welcome to my profile page. I appreciate that taking those first steps to see a therapist can be scary. We may have fears of being judged, concerns that it might not work out, and with so many therapists out there how do we pick the right one?! These are all perfectly normal thoughts and feelings to have. I will provide a non judgmental, safe space to help you explore the relationship between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, to help you reach your goals. I have over 15 years experience working in mental health and substance misuse services and am fully accredited with the BABCP.

Unanticipated experiences and changes often challenge the way we navigate life; unplanned pregnancy, neurodiverse diagnosis of ourselves or our children, experiencing abuse, painful divorce, debt, being bullied at work, redundancy, needing to care for our loved ones early on or later in life and losing them are some experiences that will require navigation. These changes can be traumatic, create a great deal of stress, isolation, anxiety and depression at a time when we need to see things clearly and make choices that suit us but we often feel unable to because of its impact on others. You want to but something is stopping you.

Talking to somebody about how you feel can be a very rewarding experience. Whatever it is, anxiety, depression, bereavement or grief, work related stress, relationship issues or just a general sense of malaise, we can talk through it all in a safe, empathic and non judgemental space. By forming a therapeutic relationship, based on absolute trust, we will work together at whatever pace you feel most comfortable with. I very much believe that everybody is an individual and the work we do will be unique to your own life events and circumstances. I am also a qualified Supervisor and offer supervision to both individuals and groups.

Given the latest government advice all sessions will be offered online. I have ten years of experience of working in this way and I am happy to give you guidance to set this up. You will need an internet connection (preferably high speed), a headset and microphone. I can also offer telephone sessions but face to face via an online platform is preferable. Psychotherapy is about being listened to and seen in a particular way. There is nowhere else in life that offers a time and space to focus on your 'self' - your body and your mind. My Kent practice is in the village of Bridge near Canterbury and is easy to reach.

There are understandable reasons why we struggle, get overwhelmed, and feel alone. Sometimes it can be hard to find the words to express what is happening inside of us. Perhaps, we have words but no one with whom we can safely share them. I know it can be difficult to talk and trust that someone will understand you. For those of us who feel this way, I invite you to consider therapy as an adventurous voyage of self-discovery. While taking on this journey will take courage and perseverance, it will lead you down a rewarding path.

Whether you are considering a course of therapy to address specific mental health challenges, or you've experienced sudden change or loss in your life and finding it hard to cope alone, I can offer you help as you take your next step. Whatever questions need to be explored and whatever current stressors are present, I can provide you with the tools to cope more easily. My approach to my clients is one of respect and compassion. Regarding therapeutic relationship, my orientation is humanistic; I believe the relationship in itself is an essential component as it creates fertile ground from which self-discovery and transformation can take place.

Great, you have already taken the first steps for you. I am not the expert on you, you are. I am here to support and explore with you what you maybe finding difficult or just not feeling Ok. This may be in your relationships, in your physical body or you are finding both these things are overwhelming sometimes. Together we can wonder, ponder and educate ourselves and understand, why? Then we can make a strategy and build on your already available resilience (you are here remember), and improve this together. This maybe just a few sessions, sometimes just one or a little longer if you need this.

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
