I offer Core Process Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems therapy (Level 1) both of which begin with the idea of core health.
It doesn't matter when you bloom, it matters that you do. I see psychotherapy as a kind and safe space for you to be seen and heard. We all have a core goodness and ability to flourish in our lives. Sometimes we need a little help to find our way.

Through exploration of your family systems, dynamics and the roles you play in life, you can discover so much about yourselves, things that you just accept and perhaps why.
I have worked for many years helping my clients to accept themselves for who they are and how they survive in the hidden world that goes on inside their heads, the world where fear holds them back and keeps them stuck. The world we are all familiar with, the place we go when we put our heads on our pillows at night and we know! I believe that through honest exploration, reflection and acceptance of our past, we can start to accept ourselves and begin to build our self-esteem, self respect, our confidence and compassion for ourselves. We can embrace the parts of us that work and let go of the parts that don't, we can change.

Welcome to Repertoire Counselling. At a certain point life feels overwhelming, we struggle to carry and understand the weight of our feelings, leading us to feel lost, stuck, alone, anxious, angry and fighting through life all by ourselves. My journey to becoming a therapist emerged out of painful experiences, which I am grateful because I love helping my clients to navigate their way through all that life has to throw at them. Talking to someone outside of your situation, who is not a family member or a friend can help in gaining relief, self-understanding, self-acceptance and help to build resilience and envision a way forward.

Helping you to understand your needs and your communication style, I can support you to build more effective and rich relationships with your friends, family and loved ones.
If you have experienced trauma as a result of your past and you find that is affecting you and your relationships in the present, I can help you gently explore these difficulties and support you to make the changes you need to make. Through childhood experiences and life events we try to fit into the world we live in. From very early on we tend to adapt ourselves to meet the needs of others, to be loved, liked and accepted. We twist and manage ourselves into expected ways of being and mask what is really going on for us. In doing this we lose the sense of who we are before we ever know.

Sometimes difficulties can have a major impact on our well-being, relationships or work. Maybe friends and family can offer some support but we may also choose to see a qualified and experienced practitioner, who can provide a safe space in which to work with whatever is going on for us. I have a wide range of experience, including working in the NHS, at university as Associate Lecturer (14 years) and in a GP practice as a Lead Therapist and Supervisor, delivering Relational Integrative Therapy. I draw on Psychodynamic and Person-Centred approaches, relational CBT and CFT (Compassion-Focussed Therapy).

You might be experiencing distressing experiences which attract various diagnoses/ labels, but I wouldn’t say you’re ‘disordered’. I'm more interested in understanding how these symptoms communicate what's happened to you and how you think psychotherapy can help you progress and create a meaningful life for yourself. After all, we wouldn't blame a flower for not growing, we would look at whether the environment was nurturing. My perspective is informed by how our environment/culture/family affects us, using contemporary ideas from the 'power threat meaning' framework, the 'mad in the UK/USA' movements, and a 'disorder for everyone'.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
