I am a creative psychotherapist (Dramatherapy), who is also trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and is CBT informed.
Hi there, I'm Alex (she/her). I work with adults, teens, and children (9+) who are struggling with anxiety and depression, and are finding that their energy for life, confidence, and self-esteem is diminishing. You might be spending a lot of time alone despite wanting to be connected to others, avoiding work or school due to fear of harsh judgment or bullying, having lots of intrusive or unwelcome thoughts, and/or engaging in self-harm or self-sabotaging behaviour as a means of coping with overwhelming feelings. You may also have experienced something traumatic or deeply painful which you want to explore safely with a professional.

Waitlist for new clients
I primarily use compassion-focused therapy (CFT) in therapy, but am also skilled in a range of other approaches including cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
I am a clinical psychologist with substantial experience of working with individuals with personality difficulties (with or without a formal diagnosis of personality disorder), PTSD, and complex trauma. Other areas of clinical expertise include anxiety, burnout, low self-esteem, dissociation and low mood. In therapy I aim to bring compassion to the ways people have learned to cope with adversity and emotional pain. I welcome anyone who is looking to understand themselves and their coping styles better, and/or is seeking ways to break cycles and gain new skills to help them move forwards in their lives.

I'm experienced in several therapies, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), mindfulness, person-centred counselling, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
Choosing a therapist can be a stressful process, and it's difficult to decide which kind of therapy to try. Many people find it helpful to work with a therapist who has trained in more than one therapy, who can switch to a different therapy when needed, and who can tailor sessions according to your needs. You can have a phone consultation with me to discuss what you are looking for and ask questions. 16 years experience in supporting neurodivergent clients (with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia or other difficulties) led me to further training in autism, and specialised CBT and ACT for ADHD and emotional regulation problems.

I am a HCPC-registered and BPS chartered Clinical Neuropsychologist, specialising in offering cognitive assessment and therapy to individuals with neurological conditions. Often, the impact of neurological symptoms can be uncertain, bringing up feelings of loss and anxiety. It can be difficult to adjust your lifestyle to the challenges that present, leading to feeling disconnected from what is most important. I pride myself on being conscientious and integral, offering a safe therapeutic space to explore what feels most difficult right now.

I work psychodynamically, use EMDR, Compassion-Focused and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and other behavioural and humanist modalities to bridge the past and the present.
Life can be stressful and full of uncertainty, so as a Counselling Psychologist I will use a variety of theories from my years of training and beyond to treat you as a whole person who is more than just their struggles, insecurities and pain. Therapy can help you deeply explore your past or give you tools to cope better in the present. It can allow someone else to understand you so that eventually you can understand yourself. I am a relatable and down to earth person and my aim is to make you feel safe, listened to, valued and understood so that you can build self-awareness, self-compassion and self-acceptance.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
