Why counselling - There are times where the pressures of life can leave us feeling overwhelmed. For many of us how we feel within ourselves is crucial in day to day life. Wherever we may find ourselves the process of counselling can give us the ability to sculpt and create a vision of belonging that is both true to ourselves and allows us to flourish. What I provide is a non-judgemental, warm and genuine approach focused on person centred therapy. This approach ensures that the client is held throughout the process and feels comfortable exploring experiences both past and present in a safe environment.

I am a UKCP registered Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapist-in-Training in my sixth year of study at the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BCPC). I work in Bristol and offer affordable therapy to adults. For me, psychotherapy is largely about creating more self-acceptance. This will look different depending on your needs, but in general it will involve a compassionate and empathetic exploration of your life experiences, and how they might influence your present circumstances, to see how each may be creating blocks in your life from a healthy expression of your feelings.

Hi, thanks for visiting my profile. I am a counsellor and psychotherapist based in Bristol. You can see me either at my practice room in Clifton or on Zoom. I believe we all have the potential to live fulfilling, satisfying lives in connection with others and that even our most difficult experiences can still have meaning. For me, therapy is “the attempt to meet the depth of our wounds with an even greater depth of tenderness” (Dr Rick Hansen).

Update: As of November 2024, I am OPEN to new enquiries. With over 20 years in practice, my main objective is for you to know that you are welcome exactly as you are. Whatever is on your mind can be explored in a non-critical and open way. I want you to know that you are safe in your counselling sessions. I offer a safe space in which you can speak and be listened to without judgement or expectation. As a psychoanalytically informed counsellor, I encourage you to speak about whatever comes to mind and to follow your thoughts wherever they lead. You may have a diagnosis or have your own terms for how you are suffering - we can start there. What we may find is that issues of identity and subjectivity follow - how you see yourself in relation to those around you now or in the past and possibly, in the future....

I believe in the power of opening up, and while I will draw on theory and knowledge to support each individual client, I am led by the client and their individual needs. An ideal client is someone who wishes to build a therapeutic space alongside me, allowing me to facilitate safety and build trust. I am interested in helping others to develop personal growth and insight through the relational dynamics they experience.

Core Process Psychotherapy is built on an embodied exploration and sharing of how it is to be uniquely you. All is welcome in the room; together as therapist and client we build a bond of safety and security. By slowing down and taking some refuge from life’s momentum, we can bring awareness to each passing moment, whatever arises.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
