Counselling in Brighton
Undertaking psychotherapy can be daunting, especially nowadays, when so many different types of therapy are available. It can be overwhelming to make that decision. In my approach, I believe that each situation is unique. Through my experience of working with teenagers and their families, as well as adults in individual and group modalities and couples, I learned to develop a sensitive ear for my client’s needs. We all sometimes struggle due to external or internal pressures or a combination. However, I deeply believe that facing difficulties with compassion and an open mind can be liberating.

I specialise (18 yrs experience) in working with young people and adults particularly neurodiverse individuals (Autism, AuDHD, ADHD, self-harm, OCD, stammer etc). Having trained and practised as a Speech & Language Therapist, I now focus on humanistic psychotherapy because it is my passion to support individuals in navigating their unique way of being in the world. As well as face to face and online sessions, I can offer animal therapy (I have a canine-concern registered black lab), assistance dogs are welcome and where needed I offer walking therapy as well as meeting clients in different locations to help with anxiety issues.

I have been a counsellor since 2012, both in private practise and working for the YPC, Brighton, AGE UK and the YMCA/Wellbeing Service. As a humanistic/intergative therapist, I believe that you are the expert on yourself and I aim to provide the conditions which allow you to explore your motivations and themes, and make meaning from your own experience. I offer an empathic, non judgemental and respectful space. By building a relationship based on acceptance it becomes possible to look at, recognise and understand where problems in your life may have arisen. Counselling can be for anyone who feels lost, sad, lonely, confused.

My therapeutic approach is best described as ‘Integrative’ which means that I bring together different schools of thought such as Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Humanistic, Existential and the Transpersonal. This enables me to draw upon a wide range of therapeutic styles which I tailor to your specific individual needs. I take a holistic approach which means I provide support that looks at the whole person, not just your mental health needs; I also consider your physical, emotional, social/sexual and spiritual wellbeing as an individual. Therapy can be an intimidating experience, especially if you are not sure where to start.

It takes courage to start therapy. Often, we are at our most vulnerable at these times. I believe the most important thing to establish first is trust. I am not here to tell you what’s ‘wrong with you’ or what you ‘have done wrong’ in the past. My aim is to meet you where you are and invite you on a journey for us to explore together, in collaboration, what is upsetting you and holding you back.

Are you feeling depressed, confused about what you feel, ground down to the point where you feel unable to cope, or simply wishing you could talk to someone and feel understood? Individuals choose therapy for a variety of reasons and often the biggest hurdle to getting help is an inner voice telling us our problems are nothing special and we should "just get on with it". I provide a safe, empathic environment where you can talk about your concerns without fear of being judged and to provide you with the means to work out your own answers and create the life you want.

When life is difficult, and there are hurdles that seem too hard to overcome, it can help to have someone to talk to. Someone who isn’t going to judge you, or tell you what to do, but will enable you to be how you’d like to be. I also work with couples - relationships can bring joy, but also challenges. Working together we can find a way to move forwards.
