I'm also an accredited Parent Infant Psychotherapist and work with parents and young babies.
As I work relationally and with unconscious processes I work well with any presenting issues that are related to attachment. These may be experienced as anxiety, depression, OCD, bereavement issues, substance use etc. You may have difficulties forming meaningful lasting relationships or have recognised a pattern in things going wrong in your life which make you unhappy. You may have current issues with your children that are echoing past hurts of your own that need attending to. I can help you to explore these issues within the safe and holding relationship that we can create together.

I've been counselling since 1989, and have extensive experience of working with sexual abuse and trauma, parenting and attachment difficulties, identity and relationship issues, depression and anxiety, bereavement and loss. I don’t claim to be an ‘expert’ in any of these areas because everyone's response is different and what matters is you and your own unique experience of these difficulties. I am committed to collaborating with you to find the resilient, hopeful part of yourself that becomes expert in managing your challenges and is motivated by the smallest signs of progress towards your preferred future.

As a therapist and midwife I understand the barriers you might feel asking for help during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth or postnatally). Many people struggle to talk about their anxiety, depression or doubts and worries about being a parent. You might feel judged or that you have failed in some way and there can be a real sense of pressure to feel positive throughout, making it sometimes feel really hard to admit you are struggling, so I understand just how significant asking for help is. Reaching out is positive and is the first step towards recovery - of your sense of self, your self worth and your wellbeing.

I can support the parent infant relationship through video feedback.
I work with challenges that may arise for parents at different stages, including fertility issues and loss, gender disappointment, fear of birth, birth trauma, intrusive thoughts, antenatal and postnatal anxiety and depression, difficulty bonding. I support parents to adjust whether it is their first child or they are juggling a growing family. I believe that people are always trying their best to cope, but sometimes these ways of coping stop working as well or become problems themselves. I know how much pressure there is to be ‘perfect’ parents and how much strain that can cause.

My work includes managing impact of past trauma in the present, men's and women's issues, identity, self esteem and confidence, communication and assertiveness, different stages of parenting, relationships, attachment and connection.
Hello I’m Selene. I have 20 years of experience as a counsellor. I am a warm and open-minded person with a good sense of humour. I offer a welcoming and confidential space where we can together create an empowering therapeutic relationship. I believe you are an expert in your own life and my role is to support and challenge you reconnecting with yourself and your strengths. Counselling is an opportunity to give yourself the time and space to imagine who you want to be. Sometimes fear and shame make us stuck and disconnected from others and not able to ask for what we want. Therapy can help you free yourself and open connection.

My main focus is always on creating a safe therapeutic relationship where we can think creatively together about the difficulties you might be facing. I particularly enjoy working with neurodivergent young people and adults, exploring together how they experience the world. I work predominantly from a trauma-informed perspective and a lot of my work with neurodivergent families focusses on the parent-child relationship.

The decision to try therapy can seem very daunting, but you have already taken the first step if you are here in this directory. Dealing with difficult issues, loss, bereavement, trauma, divorce/separation, identity , etc can feel utterly overwhelming. Initially, the prospect of sharing such experience may feel like a step too far. My own and clients’ experiences have shown me time & again that it is through the process of talking therapy that in sharing the burden the healing can begin. I have a passionate belief in the power of the wounded, with support, to find some reconciliation, with themselves, their history & in relationship

I have over 30 years experience offering psychotherapy in the voluntary sector, social services and NHS. I qualified with The Guild of Psychotherapists in 2008. I work with people with a wide range of difficulties including depression and anxiety. I offer either weekly, twice or thrice weekly sessions to look in depth at the issues you are facing in your life at present. Through ongoing discussions together it becomes possible to find more clarity as to what may be causing unhappiness and to become more aware of how you might make changes in your perspective or in life situation to find a better way forward.

Parenting Counsellors

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
