Many people have had an experience of therapy in the past and it has not produced the results they wanted. This in part can be due to the person going to see a therapist who is trained in one specific therapeutic modality (approach), who then tries to make the client fit that one approach. Collaboratively, we will work together to help you feel better, happier, more in control and confident in who you are as a person. As you begin to understand yourself and why you do things more, this will open you up to greater awareness in all parts of your life; home, work and relationships.

Trauma seems to be the buzz word of the moment but, most adults have experienced a trauma of some kind during their life, which has had a major impact on how they feel or behave. I have worked with many people who appear to be experiencing existential crises (“Who am I?” “I don’t even know who I am!”) and for whom the mask has dropped after many years of appearing to function well in their lives. This applies to many ex boarders who, having learned to suppress their emotions at boarding school to ensure their survival, find it difficult to be at ease with intimacy and their authentic feelings ( I am an ex-boarder myself).

Life is a beautiful challenge. We all face adversity in life, whether this manifests as mental or physical illness, trauma, or difficulty coping with day to day experiences. Therapy is not just about treatment or addressing mental illness, it is a tool that we can all use to develop a better understanding of ourselves and our individual lived experience, and to reconnect with the joy in our lives. Therapy can help us identify thinking and behaviour patterns, address past and present traumas, cope with everyday fears and anxieties, and learn ways to better relate to and understand ourselves, our environments, and other people.

How does forensic psychology work?
Forensic psychology works by providing those in the legal system with expert information about psychology and behaviour that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Forensic psychologists do this through a range of services—conducting psychological assessments for court cases, assisting police officers with investigations, providing expert opinion, helping with mediation, and providing mental health care to victims or perpetrators of crimes.
Can a forensic psychologist help with child custody cases?
Yes. In the event that it’s needed, an attorney or judge may appoint a forensic psychologist to provide an assessment and recommendation. This process involves multiple interviews with the child, the parent (or parents), and sometimes others. The psychologist assesses the parent’s mental health, strengths and weaknesses, and parenting practices to understand what’s in the child’s best interest. They then complete a report with recommendations based on their assessment.
Do forensic psychologists help solve crimes?
In some cases they do. For example, criminal profiling involves collaborating with law enforcement officers to construct a profile of a perpetrator based on psychology, personality, and behaviour as suggested by the crime in order to focus the investigation. They may also offer expert input on subjects related to a case such as deception, false confessions, and the reliability of testimony based on eyewitness accounts.
How long do people typically work with a forensic psychologist?
The length of time an individual works with a forensic psychologist depends on the relevant service. For example, if a forensic psychologist is conducting a psychological assessment for a court case, this may take one to two sessions to complete (although they can be more extensive). If the forensic psychologist is providing therapy to someone accused or convicted of a crime, treatment may last for several months or more.
