My name is Cathryn and I work as a humanistic therapist with adults in the Brighton and Hove area. I work with individuals who have come to therapy seeking to explore and make meaning of experiences and challenges that life has presented so far, and the difficult, often confusing feelings that emerge from these. My approach is to work with you to build a safe, trusting space from where your unique identity and experiences can be explored safely and honestly at your own pace. I respect and welcome the personal journey that has led you into the therapy room, supporting you with warmth and kindness as you continue this.

I am a warm, compassionate person and experienced psychotherapeutic counsellor. We can all find ourselves in times of difficulty, whether in a time of crisis, feeling stuck in repetitive patterns, feeling disconnected, struggling to find meaning, or feeling like our true self has become buried. Counselling offers space to slow down and connect with yourself in the presence of another person, to be truly heard and to explore difficult thoughts or emotions. It can enable reflection on helpful or unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling and relating, and welcome deeper self-acceptance and self-compassion.

I have been a counsellor since 2012, both in private practise and working for the YPC, Brighton, AGE UK and the YMCA/Wellbeing Service. As a humanistic/intergative therapist, I believe that you are the expert on yourself and I aim to provide the conditions which allow you to explore your motivations and themes, and make meaning from your own experience. I offer an empathic, non judgemental and respectful space. By building a relationship based on acceptance it becomes possible to look at, recognise and understand where problems in your life may have arisen. Counselling can be for anyone who feels lost, sad, lonely, confused.

Only a new path can lead to a new place. You may be suffering with trauma and navigating the repercussions of difficult events or memories. You might feel like you have lost your direction and maybe even a part of yourself along the way. I will work with you to help you to process these changes and gain a deeper understanding of the road that you have travelled so far. This can open your eyes to choices and options that might be hard for you to see right now.

Our mental health is connected with how we feel about ourselves and our life experiences. I offer a safe counselling relationship in which you can better understand these experiences, the challenges and struggles you face, and work out how you can respond. I will work to create a relationship with you in which you can feel safe enough to talk about difficult or painful experiences, thoughts and feelings. I will not judge you, no matter what you need to talk about. My aim is to help you start to connect with and feel differently about yourself. This can lead to greater self-awareness and acceptance.

We all have the right to be our own expression of human. Maybe you struggle with feeling that there’s something ‘wrong’ or ‘different’ about you? Maybe life sometimes feel too difficult to manage? Or you may often feel that you need to hide, change, or control aspects of yourself in the outside world. Life often presents us with unexpected challenges and having someone there to support you can make these challenges feel more manageable. I passionately believe in empowering individuals to find their own answers to the challenges they face. I value diversity, integrity, connection, and the journey of self-discovery.

I've been counselling since 1989, and have extensive experience of working with sexual abuse and trauma, parenting and attachment difficulties, identity and relationship issues, depression and anxiety, bereavement and loss. I don’t claim to be an ‘expert’ in any of these areas because everyone's response is different and what matters is you and your own unique experience of these difficulties. I am committed to collaborating with you to find the resilient, hopeful part of yourself that becomes expert in managing your challenges and is motivated by the smallest signs of progress towards your preferred future.

There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

Hello and welcome to my blurb. I know it can potentially be a daunting experience choosing a therapist so I’ll try and make it as easy as possible to see a glimpse of me, and be clear on how it all works. What is most important for me is to be authentic, open-minded and honest in everything that I do, including my practice. I will always endeavour to be myself, which I hope will give you the permission to bring your whole self. I’m a person-centred therapist, which means that I am led by you and will be with you in your therapeutic journey as long as you want me there.

I'm an experienced integrative therapist and work flexibly and dynamically with adults, couples, families and trainee counsellors. Early relationships and life events may have shaken your ability to fully value yourself or others. You might be bereaved, struggling with a relationship, experiencing depression or anxiety. I'm objective and compassionate, offering support to connect with frightening or buried feelings. Letting go of strategies that no longer work for you, without pressure or expectation, can help you to find your own truth and a sense of who you really are.

Hello, I am Sabine, a Psychologist and Psychotherapist in advanced training. I believe in what the therapeutic relationship could offer: a nurturing environment where you can talk about your difficulties. This can lead you to a deeper understanding of yourself and your worries, which can be the first step for real change. My approach is guided by the “I am OK – You’re OK”: people are born OK and can re-decide their own life. I believe that a person can change their dysfunctional relational and behavioural patterns, if and when they are provided with a facilitating and non-judgemental environment. Please enquire for pricing info.

I work relationally to help clients understand how past experiences and relationships might be impacting current difficulties. Therapy can help make changes to these often hard-wired patterns and facilitate the development of more healthy fulfilling relationships. By building a relationship based upon trust, empathy and acceptance therapy enables a greater awareness and understanding of how and where difficulties have arisen and provides the conditions for change to occur.

If you've arrived here, you are already thinking about counselling. You might feel depressed, anxious or overwhelmed and finding it difficult to cope with the challenges of life. Perhaps you have experienced a recent loss, had a sudden change of circumstances or are struggling with relationships. Maybe you don't even know what's troubling you. Research shows positive change happens when there is a good match between client and counsellor. It’s difficult to choose a counsellor or know what to expect from counselling without having a face-to-face meeting. This is why I offer a reduced rate intro session of £15 where we can meet

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
