Whatever you're going through in life counselling provides non-judgemental and empathic support. Being seen and heard goes a long way towards starting to feel better. Honest communication tends to provide insight and clarity. This promotes growth, which ultimately results in change and acceptance. Guided reflection can help to make long lasting positive changes to you, your relationships and your future. The space to unburden and review your coping strategies can improve confidence and self-worth. You don't have to suffer alone, or worry about the impact of opening up to those around you. I look forward to working with you soon.

I am a specialist in working with trauma and sexual abuse, and, consequently, have extensive experience working with complex trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, intimacy issues, shame, feeling stuck and low self-esteem.
In my practice, the therapeutic relationship is a space where difficult life experiences can be worked through. I take an integrative approach, in which I encourage you to be curious about how your difficulties relate to previous experiences and your expectations for yourself and others. This often brings up feelings that can seem unwelcome and I work with you to help you understand unwanted emotions and connect to your body. My approach aims to deepen your self-awareness in the here-and-now as this helps you to understand and feel compassion for yourself, and be okay in who you are.

I can help with difficulties like anxiety & panic, PTSD, depression, postpartum psychosis, OCD, phobias and toko phobia - fear of pregnancy/birth - and trauma (earlier life or birth trauma) & pregnancy loss.
As a therapist and midwife I understand the barriers you might feel asking for help during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth or postnatally). Many people struggle to talk about their anxiety, depression or doubts and worries about being a parent. You might feel judged or that you have failed in some way and there can be a real sense of pressure to feel positive throughout, making it sometimes feel really hard to admit you are struggling, so I understand just how significant asking for help is. Reaching out is positive and is the first step towards recovery - of your sense of self, your self worth and your wellbeing.

My transdiagnostic approach using REBT enables me to teach clients how to restructure their thinking related to their behaviours and emotions, whether that be unhealthy anger, anxiety, depression or jealousy, to name a few.
What my clients most commonly seek is guidance to help them understand their own emotions, responses and rules that they hold about life. My clients are not dictated to, but supported in learning about what is helpful and rational in their lives, and what is targeted for change. Our honest talks involve a lot of empathy and humour, as there are common themes that we all recognise as causing issues in our lives. My clients are very much individuals, spoken to without judgement and encouraged to make changes to their thinking and then behaviour which will help free them from well-worn paths and being 'stuck'.

I have also worked with depression and anxiety.
There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

You may be struggling to keep anxiety, stress, loneliness or depression at arm's length, coping with family conflict, childhood trauma, ADHD, chronic illness or difficulties related to sexuality and relationships.
I am an experienced, welcoming and open-minded counsellor. Exploring in-depth what is troubling us with someone who is really listening, not just to your words but to the person behind them, can in itself be a healing process. It may also bring to light beliefs and ways of living that are holding you back. I draw on a range of integrative talking therapies (including Internal Family Systems). When something more is needed than talking alone, Brainspotting (a somatic therapy that evolved out of EMDR) can offer a gentle but powerful way to access deeper areas of the brain where emotional difficulties arise.

I've been counselling since 1989, and have extensive experience of working with sexual abuse and trauma, parenting and attachment difficulties, identity and relationship issues, depression and anxiety, bereavement and loss. I don’t claim to be an ‘expert’ in any of these areas because everyone's response is different and what matters is you and your own unique experience of these difficulties. I am committed to collaborating with you to find the resilient, hopeful part of yourself that becomes expert in managing your challenges and is motivated by the smallest signs of progress towards your preferred future.

Starting psychotherapy can be anxiety-provoking.
Hello, I am Sabine, a Psychologist and Psychotherapist in advanced training. I believe in what the therapeutic relationship could offer: a nurturing environment where you can talk about your difficulties. This can lead you to a deeper understanding of yourself and your worries, which can be the first step for real change. My approach is guided by the “I am OK – You’re OK”: people are born OK and can re-decide their own life. I believe that a person can change their dysfunctional relational and behavioural patterns, if and when they are provided with a facilitating and non-judgemental environment. Please enquire for pricing info.

We all have times in our lives when we find it difficult to cope, causing us issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, feelings of emptiness, loneliness, anger and relationship problems. I offer a place to work out what is going for you, in a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space. Sometimes we are aware of issues that are causing our distress and sometimes not. Being able to work out exactly what is going on for each of us as an individual, can be the key to change.

My areas of specific focus are depression &stress, bereavement, gender, sexuality & relationship diversity (GSRD), terminal & chronic conditions, eco- anxiety, and neurodiversity.
Across 9 years of psychodynamic therapy practice, I have evolved an approach informed by my concurrent practices as artist and gardener: nurturing, growth and transformation infuse our work together, both informing and cultivating the discovery of where and how we can live in ourselves and the world. The work of therapy resides in a space that we cultivate together - a space where meaning can be made or found - it is a place in the clearing. Here, lives and held views can be encouraged to be found, to be heard, and to potentially transform.

In that time I have supported people in their recovery from diverse problems such as depression, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety disorders like panic disorder, phobias, social anxiety, OCD and PTSD.
Coming along to therapy for the first time can feel exposing. It's important to remember that you are not alone in any difficulties you're facing. I aim to create a safe, non-judgmental space for my clients to talk, think and grow. Therapy can be about making specific changes so that life feels more meaningful, rewarding or less overwhelming. Or it can simply be an opportunity to be properly heard, to reflect and get to know yourself better. I am a HCPC-registered senior Clinical Psychologist working privately and in an NHS community service.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
