“What is the bravest thing you have ever said?” asked the boy… “Help” said the horse (Charlie Mackesy). I feel passionate that you have the right to enter into a supportive relationship. I will offer you a safe space and time in which you will be accepted, heard and understood without any fear of judgement. It is a space to breathe and reflect at your own pace. I don't believe we have it all figured out, but from my own personal struggles and life experiences I do have an in depth understanding of how life-changing counselling can be. I would like to share your journey with you and I will value your bravery in asking for help.

There are many reasons people come to counselling. Life can feel overwhelming and we sometimes feel that we are not coping as well as we might. Do you need a safe, confidential space to be seen and heard? Would you like to explore your feelings and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your emotions? You may have had counselling or therapy before, or you may be looking at it for the first time. Together, in confidence, we can look at your experiences, your past trauma or adversity and your current challenges.

Taking the step to seek psychological support can be a daunting prospect. Understanding this, I work with clients in a collaborative manner, enabling a safe and helpful environment, so the client feels comfortable enough to share some of their life struggles. I am passionate about adapting psychological therapies so that they are accessible and meaningful. I value a non-stigmatising approach to understand complex mental health issues and see difficulties within a multi-layered context.

Distress comes in many forms: Maybe you’re struggling to cope with parts of yourself which feel ‘wrong’ or not good enough. Perhaps you feel scared and alone and wish that you could be seen and valued for just being you, and not what is expected of you. Maybe you’re not sure how you feel, or why you keep reacting to others the way you do; you just know that you don’t want to be stuck in unhelpful patterns or feel overwhelmed or out of control anymore. This list is by no means exhaustive; it is human nature to experience a range of difficulties but you don’t have to struggle alone, without support.

Maybe the journey isn't about becoming anything. Maybe it's about unbecoming everything that isn't really you, so you can be who you were meant to be all along. Our lives present unique challenges – relationship difficulties, bereavements, life transitions, & chronic symptoms - often creating feelings of frustration, anxiety, & sadness. At such times it is easy to forget that we all need assistance in addressing these challenges, especially as they can often feel overwhelming, or even impossible, to deal with. We all deserve to have support when we are struggling, & often it is specifically this support that allows change to occur.

The aim of sessions is to work towards an understanding of the challenges you face and the changes you wish to make. During sessions, you will be the focus of our attentions and I will value you without judgement, as a unique person, an equal. Having been in counselling myself, I have an understanding of the process. It can be a daunting prospect, and I will support you in that journey. I have listed many specialities and whilst I do have experience of working with them, I believe there is more to you than a "diagnosis" or an "issue" so the focus is on you the whole person, and whatever you choose to bring. NOTE - OVER 18'S ONLY

Sometimes, it might be difficult to find your way through challenging times alone, or understand how something significant in your life has affected you. Within therapy, we can work together to discover a way through. Sharing thoughts, feelings and memories can be intense and painful, especially if it is your first time opening up to someone else; exploring such things can make you feel worse before you feel better. Therapy helps this process become a movement towards personal growth, understanding, acceptance and change, free of any judgment.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
