My aim is to co-create an environment that offers you a place to bring and share your unique experiences and begin to explore and understand how they have impacted you. I believe everyone can benefit from sharing their stories; often being truly heard for the first time. Nonetheless, this can feel odd initially, sat sharing information with a stranger. My creative approach to therapy responds to your individual needs to best support you whist undertaking this. My experience of working with survivors of trauma has been a live demonstration of the impact of previous and current experiences on our health.

Hi, I’m Kim, also known as the Barefoot Counsellor. I’m really glad you found your way here—looking for a therapist is a brave first step, and I’m honored you’re considering me. So, let me share a bit about myself to help you decide if we’re the right fit. The name might make you think I’m all about the feet, but being barefoot is more about how I express my true self and stay grounded in the present. It’s part of my journey, though there’s no expectation for you to follow that in therapy.

Asking for help is a big step, so it is important to find a someone you feel comfortable with. As an experienced integrative therapist, my main skill is listening without judgement. You might want to work out how best to manage what goes on in your mind and emotions to enjoy a better quality of life. In therapy, week by week you may feel a sense of relief, gain awareness of yourself and build positive ways to look after your mental and emotional health. Counselling is not always an easy journey, but by trusting the process and with my support, it is well worth it. "The wound is the place where the light enters you". - Rumi

You're experiencing problems that cause you anxiety and distress in some areas of your life, and or your relationships. These might include sex, intimacy, and/or struggles with your own or a partner’s porn use. When things go wrong in our life or relationships it can feel hopeless, frightening and lonely. Talking and gaining an understanding of your experience with a trained professional can be the thing that turns your life around. If your world has been rocked by your own, or your partner's infidelity or betrayal, or you’re fearful of secretive behaviours being discovered doing this work can avert distress and fallout in future.

'Helping Young People realise their full potential' and with the pandemic still affecting educational, social and family dynamics, 'Helping Young People adapt positively to change' With over 15 years experience counselling young people in private practice, schools and colleges. I have successfully worked on anxiety prevention, family dynamics, dyspraxia, autism, self harming behaviours, sexuality and gender, exam pressure, bullying, OCD and many more. Clients come to me when they feel hopeless, misunderstood and stuck; they may be looking for a way to feel more connection and joy; they often know that life could and should be better for them, that their mental health could be stronger, but they just cannot get there on their own. I work well with clients who have experienced loss and those who are trying to find their place in a new life stage, as well as individuals who are impacted by shame and those seeking healing from past trauma. I have significant experience working with LGBTQ+ clients, people in non-traditional relationships and neuroatypical people.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
