Anxiety can be overwhelming sometimes can’t it? Its ok to be anxious (it doesn't feel ok though does it). I’m sorry to hear you are finding things difficult right now. We are often told to just stop being anxious but you and I know that simply does not work. Sometimes we need support and someone to tell us ‘its ok to feel that way’ and that ‘I’m here and I'm listening.’ In my therapy we are in it together. I will support you, guide you, offer you validation and compassion at a time when you need it most. I can help you think and behave in a more helpful way and also encourage conversation when things have fallen off track.

Over my time working in mental health, I have worked within many specialist services including outpatient services, addiction therapy programmes, general psychiatry in IAPT services and on psychiatric wards. I offer short and long term counselling to adults - providing a non-judgemental and empathetic space to be truly heard.  My specialisms are times of life transitions, particularly bereavement and new parenthood. I trained integratively but primarily work from a person-centred space. This means that I believe you are the expert in knowing what you need. However, I understand from personal experience that this internal voice can sometimes feel lost or silenced and having another person there to validate, listen and support your process can make a real difference.

When emotional problems arise it can be difficult to know where to turn and pressures to cope can leave us isolated and desperate. There may be people around who offer their time but feelings of shame and fears can make it difficult to make use of them. It might be that there is no-one to speak to and problems originating in the past are getting in the way of you finding satisfaction in life. Traumas can remain unprocessed and present themselves in everyday life. Psychotherapy is a way of exploring oneself and relationships to try to make sense of the patterns and issues that are blocking you.

I work with both children and adults and have a keen interest in working with those who have experienced complex/relational trauma with or without self harming/suicidal behaviour. I work with a variety of mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. I also work with couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship and work towards understanding the emotional conflicts, that result in the relationship being strained or likely to end without support. There is no one size fits all therapeutic approach and so I place importance on developing a shared understanding of what the core emotional issues are that impact you.

Life takes us all by surprise at times and sometimes we can bounce back, but sometimes we need a bit of a helping hand; being able to identify those times and reach out is a sign of strength and the first step to taking control. If you are reading this then you have already taken the first step and I commend you for that.

You may be looking here because you are dealing with upsetting or challenging feelings and experiences, feeling overwhelmed, or having troubles in your relationships. If so, psychotherapy could help you. In the psychotherapy sessions you can explore various aspects of your life and feelings, talking about them freely and openly in a way that is rarely possible with friends or family. Bottled-up feelings such as anger, anxiety, grief and embarrassment can become very intense and counselling offers an opportunity to explore them, with the possibility of making them easier to understand.

Welcome. My name is Terina. Therapy is a bit like a walk through a forest that we agree to go on together. We don't yet know what the experience will be like, where it will take us or what might come up and we can't determine the outcome - it is new and unknown for both of us. The difference between us (therapist and client) is that I have walked similar paths before so I am able to recognise the challenge and your courage in taking the first step. The important thing is, we do this walk together. I can offer you my support, empathy and honesty and the space to explore anything that matters to you, without judgement.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
