Everyday life throws up challenges which can effect our emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual state. Therapy provides a safe environment to talk about anything you want to. Exploring issues such as relationship difficulties, physical and mental health concerns, loss, self-confidence and self-esteem can make a real difference. When words are not enough... the creative arts are used alongside talking therapy to give a different perspective and help make sense of your experience. Focusing on understanding your feelings, supporting a healthier, stronger self, and helping to gain a sense of meaning in your life.

We all confront struggles at some stage in our lives, and overcoming these can feel like a challenge. There may be challenges with our internal world, in our relationships, or we may experience a significant life event that means we start to feel ‘stuck’. This can lead to feeling a lack of self-confidence and to feelings of self-doubt. I understand that taking that first step to talk to someone can be difficult, and thus I create a safe space that encourages you to feel supported and heard. I believe in the importance of working alongside you as part of a journey to increased self-development and overall improved well-being.

I am an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with the BABCP.My skills, interests and experience are primarily in eating disorders, depression and anxiety disorders. It is not unusual to feel lost and stuck in your illness, and it can feel anxiety provoking and frightening when initially asking for help. You may feel conflicted about letting go of your illness as you may find it helps and protects you at times - this is not uncommon - and we will spend some time at the start of therapy understanding what is keeping you stuck and working through some of these conflicting feelings in order to decide together the best ways to move

Is life overwhelming or getting you down right now? Or perhaps you have felt this way for a long time. Maybe you're struggling with painful feelings like jealousy, anger or guilt. Or you're struggling with anxiety or depression and you're not sure what's causing it. Perhaps you are struggling with low self-esteem or relationship difficulties. It's hard to know who to turn to sometimes because of feelings of shame, or feeling like a burden. Whatever is troubling you it seems you have made that first step to seeking the right help.

Life can be challenging and sometimes events happen that leave us struggling to make sense of who we are. Trauma and ruptures in early childhood can lead to beliefs that we are at fault, that it is not okay to be us. Do you blame yourself or believe that you are not enough or have a belief that no one would like you if they really knew you. Do you have an inner critic that doesn’t allow for peace and calm, that is always pushing you to do more and be better? Do you struggle to feel safe and relaxed in your own body or in the presence of others. Being here, you have already taken a step towards your own healing.

Are you feeling sad, lost or fearful? Are you dealing with relationship issues, a traumatic event or might not know why you feel unhappy, and need help to move forward in a safe space? You may want to explore and work on yourself, in a non-judgmental environment, or want to talk about difficult issues with someone you feel comfortable talking to. Some years ago, I went on my own journey through therapy, which helped me to understand the process of counselling, and value of being in a safe space with someone who showed me genuineness, acceptance, and empathy, which is what I aim to provide for my clients.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
