Hi, I'm Ali. I am a relational Integrative counsellor. All this means is that I am able to draw on a blend of therapeutic ideas and techniques to offer an experience of counselling that is helpful and suits you as an individual. At the heart of my work is a hope that I can offer a warm, open and safe counselling relationship that allows you to speak freely about your thoughts, feelings and emotions. You may have a specific reason for seeking counselling and a clear idea of what you would like to achieve. Perhaps you have a general sense of unhappiness or unease, and you would like some help to explore why that might be.

Life can be unpredictable and some experiences can cause reactions we don’t fully understand. Counselling can help gain relief and clarity, helping you to find a healthier way forward. Hearing your thoughts and feelings out loud, in the presence of a trained professional can bring about shifts in awareness and perception. Facing your concerns or fears can feel empowering, helping you to feel more in control. My aim is to provide a warm, welcoming safe environment where together we can explore any worries, problems or issues that are causing you any distress, sadness or anxiety.

How you feel about yourself and your worth can impact on you every day and in every relationship. You may have difficulties with family members or in friendships and more personal relationships. You may find it difficult to voice your needs. Reflecting on how we are with others and with our self can be revealing and bring about change. This can help you to be more present and involved in your life. These thoughts and feelings didn’t develop overnight and I provide you with a confidential space to support you in this exploration for lasting change. I am still able to see clients face to face following government Covid Guidelines.

I’ve worked with neurotypical and neurodivergent people experiencing anxiety, bereavement, depression, trauma, ADHD, OCD, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, spiritual crises, illness, transgenerational trauma, racism, and those who want to connect more deeply with themselves.
Any adverse experience will manifest itself both physically and emotionally. It can be overwhelming when anxiety, low-self esteem, shame, self-sabotaging or anger are present in daily life. Even in the most unexpected situations, they can manifest in real physical reactions in the body. Body Psychotherapy also known as Somatic Psychotherapy, is a specialised approach that combines talking with body awareness, mindfulness and works gently with the Autonomic Nervous System. This process can help to break patterns by understanding and integrating the roots of what troubles you, leading up to positive effects on your daily experiences.

I enjoy and am experienced working with a very diverse range of issues including anxiety and depression, low self esteem, bullying, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, loss, divorce, abandonment, attachment and trauma, and with a wide range of Adult clients (18+) including those from the LGBTQ+ and BAME communities and those with personality disorders.
As a relational humanistic psychotherapist, I specialise in creating a warm and safe, non-judgmental and empathic space where clients are able to explore any difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are getting in the way of healthy living, gaining insight into how to go forward. Oftentimes having suffered a significant life event such as a loss or bereavement, perhaps a divorce or other confusing relationship issues in the distant past, we become blocked, needing effective strategies and techniques to continue. I work online (during Covid lockdowns) by telephone or face to face, in both short and long term settings.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
