Finding the right counsellor or therapist is often a difficult task. There are so many experienced professionals to choose from and each has their own specialities and individual style of working. I believe that a great place to start is by finding someone you can connect with and trust with your fears and worries; who can offer you the safe space you need to talk freely and be listened to with compassion, empathy and without judgment.

As a humanistic-integrative counsellor, I take the view that there is no single approach that can treat every client, in all situations. I therefore offer an approach to counselling that combines different elements of several specific therapies so as to enable me to provide the appropriate interventions for each individual. I believe each person is an 'unique whole' and counselling techniques are best tailored to fit the unique individuals needs and personal circumstances. It is of primary importance to me that I offer you highly confidential service based on you as an individual in your distinctive circumstances.

I have worked with a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationships, and bereavement, whatever you bring I will listen without judgement.
If you are looking for a counsellor that puts you at the centre of the work, allowing you to go at your own pace, I am here for you. Working in an integrative way, I work with people aged 12+ and focus on trying to provide a non-judgemental therapeutic relationship where I aim for us to connect in a way for you to be comfortable to be yourself and say the unspoken things. I will get alongside you to explore and notice with curiosity what you share, gently challenging at times, asking questions and highlighting where there might be repetitive behaviours and thought patterns, that may have been harmful or unproductive in the past.

I work particularly well with teens ( having not yet grown up- I see a different perspective!) bereavement and grief, sexuality, questioning and diversity issues.
Clients contact me when they have anxiety, panic attacks, grief and questions of themselves.Sometimes trauma and low self esteem can cause people to seek help.I also find life transitions are the catalyst for seeking help. Talking to me in a safe, unjudged safe space can provide the answers to unpick a lifetimes hurt and shame. Working through the jumble of memories, people who have caused you harm and spoken critical words takes its toll and won’t go away by just ignoring it. Our own self criticism can eat away at the successes. I can help you make sense of it and move forward with your life’s goals that you deserve finally.

You could have had a bereavement or loss and feel you need someone to listen to you without offering you advice.
Hello, I'm Marlene. My counseling and psychotherapy services focus on the person's needs. The restrictions placed on social gatherings and face-to-face interactions during the lockdown exacerbated people's grief and loss. A lot of people are still dealing with the fallout from the restrictions now that all the restrictions are gone. There may be certain emotions that are overwhelming you, and you cannot understand why. Your body may not feel right, and you can sense something isn't right within you. If you would like to start feeling like yourself again. You might find counselling helpful to gain a deeper understanding.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
