Is life overwhelming and you need to talk to someone? Maybe you need help to develop coping strategies for your anxiety? Whatever challenges you are are facing, I offer a confidential and supportive space to explore your feelings. Being heard and seen in this space, without judgement can be deeply healing. I won't give advice but I won't sit and say nothing either. Instead, I will ask questions and offer other perspectives, enabling you to consider your troubles in depth, and giving you an opportunity to explore what you can do to move forward. I can also suggest ways to help manage panic attacks, and feelings of anxiety and anger.

Hi. My name is Dan. Most of us seem to spend lots of our time thinking (or maybe worrying?) about our past, or envisioning our future. The difficult truth however is that in actuality the only genuine experience of life we can have is here, now, in the present moment. When we talk about our thoughts and feelings, our relationship to them changes. It's not magic. My role is simply to listen to you with compassion, without judgement, and perhaps help you to hear yourself differently, in the “safe space” of a confidential and (when it works) unique relationship. You are and can only ever possibly be the greatest expert on you.

I have worked as a counsellor, psychotherapist and coach for almost 20 years so I have gained a very broad experience of people's issues and needs. I work with individuals and couples. I offer help and guidance into how we become more comfortable with who we are, where we come from and what we desire from our lives in the future....how we fit into the World. This may be as an individual or as part of a couple relationship. I find that anxiety and stress affect so many people in their working and private lives - especially presented with the challenges of trying to live happily in an immense city such as London.

The therapeutic relationship is a place where two human beings can connect on a deeper level to what we may experience in some aspects of day-to-day life, and to really begin to unpick the challenges that you may be experiencing. The chance to sit with another person, to talk, be free from judgments, in a safe and non-threatening environment can be truly life changing. It is an opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood, without the other person having an agenda for how they would like you to be. As well as my work online I am able to see clients face to face at Horizons Counselling service in Plymouth.

Hi, I'm Suzy - an experienced psychotherapeutic counsellor and EMDR therapist and formerly a cardiac physiologist in the NHS. It's really hard to grow in isolation and create change on your own ... and it takes courage to seek support ... but through therapy, you could get to a place where your life feels more comfortable - a place you really want to be and somewhere you could flourish and feel content. I can't wave a magic wand but I can support you in reaching the goal of living your best life.

Life is like surfing. You can't always predict the conditions, but whatever water you find yourself in, psychotherapy can help you choose which waves to paddle for, which to ignore and how to shape a board that suits the way you surf best. My practice is based in contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy and explores unconscious ways of thinking and acting that may be impacting on your ability to live well today - whatever that means for you. Rather than one psychoanalytic school, I can choose from a range of theory and approaches depending on what suits your needs and how you prefer to work.

Anxiety is tough, but I can help you cultivate a new, empowered relationship with it, giving you the freedom to live more authentically - in your relationships, work life and free time. Anxiety has many faces. Maybe you wake up with a knot in your stomach, worrying that something bad will happen; avoid social events because they are too uncomfortable; replay conversations in your head wishing you’d handled them better; find it hard to concentrate; under the weight of your churned-up feelings, you say things that put a strain on your relationships. How far back can you trace these uneasy feelings? Maybe all the way to your childhood?

As we move through life we will experience many changes, some for the better, some leaving us with feelings that may start to impact on other areas of our lives. It can feel very scary when suddenly things that didn't used to worry or distress us seem now to be a problem. Or it could be that you just need to understand why you feel the way you do about certain situation. We can feel lonely and isolated within the problem, this is when counselling can give you the space to explore what is causing the problem without the advice or direction that family and friends can sometime give.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
