Hello, welcome to my page. I am an integrative counsellor, which means I use different approaches to therapy depending on the client’s individual need. I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and abide by the guidelines set out in their Ethical Framework (2108). I offer both long and short term therapy in the form of 50 minute sessions, with a focus on providing a safe, empathetic space that feels supportive and non-judgemental. There can be many reasons why we seek counselling, whether that’s due to difficulties from the past, or working on change and self awareness in the here and now.

You may have had experience of counselling or therapy , or none at all. Sometimes it is hard to make the first step into talking therapy. You may be feeling that it could be helpful to have some time to talk about what is going on in your life, about feelings of loss, unhappiness, anxiety or maybe that things are just not 'right'. Feelings of loneliness and isolation are particularly difficult at this time. Working with the right counsellor can help to work through issues from the past , present day problems or looking towards the future and what you may want to change in your life.

People seek counselling for many different reasons. You may have experienced changes in your life such as; a physical illness or chronic diagnosis, relationship difficulties, divorce or bereavement. You may be depressed or anxious for reasons you can't explain. All of these things can be difficult to deal with alone.

Hello, I’m Grainne (‘Gronya’) an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist. When you're encountering emotional difficulties it can feel isolating. Perhaps you’re struggling with anxiety, low mood, loss, or relationship issues, experiencing effects of past or recent trauma or trying to navigate a time of unsettling change. You might not be sure why you feel distressed, but you don't need to manage it alone. I offer a confidential space where you can feel heard and supported to process your past experiences, explore where you are right now, and discover what you may need to move forwards and feel better.

All of us experience challenges in our lives and sometimes these challenges are difficult to carry. You may be feeling stressed, angry, anxious, confused, inadequate or overwhelmed with sadness. You may feel isolated with your thoughts and feelings. Sitting within a confidential and supportive environment with someone you can trust and who will listen, can help you understand and make sense of your situation.

Welcome, often taking the first steps into therapy can feel overwhelming. I offer a non-judgement, safe space to explore thoughts and feelings that might be affecting certain behaviours. As I work by a psychodynamic model means together, we would travel through thoughts, feelings and memories trying to bring the unconscious to the conscious. Ultimately gaining a better understanding of the influences of the past and gaining more insight of self.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
