Love, sex and personal relationships are where we manage our hopes, our fears and our vulnerabilities. When our connection with ourselves and others is going well it can feel transformative, but when it isn’t it can be extremely distressing. I offer a non-judgemental integrative approach to relationship and psychosexual therapy to work best with your circumstance, whatever they are, whether single, in a couple or open/polyamorous relationships. Troubled relationships, arguing, erection issues, loss of desire, anxiety, painful sex, vaginismus, shame about porn use or kinks, communication problems. This can all change.

I am interested in why you are seeking counselling; you may wish to describe any previous experiences of counselling you have had. You may wish to express what you feel your current support systems include- such as family and friends- and think about what you would like to achieve through therapy. If we decide to work together, we can agree a mutually convenient way to engage. I view entering into a therapeutic relationship as an act of bravery and a leap of faith. Building trust in our relationship is a journey I never underestimate and a privilege that I never take for granted.

Since then I have worked in private practice and have accepted referrals from NHS, Women's Refuge, CAMHS, and other charities, and have also worked with teenagers in a school setting.
Whether you are looking for support through a challenging time, or wanting to make changes in your life, or explore your deeper motivations, I offer short and long term counselling and psycotherapy in a safe and caring space. I work face-to-face in Saltaire, Yorkshire and online. Sometimes life throws us challenges which can be difficult to work through alone, and having a trained therapist to support you in this can be invaluable.

Life can be hard. We can feel anxious, depressed, confused or alone. We may struggle to find happiness in ourselves, and our relationships with others. We may be trying to come to terms with loss or abuse. There may be things from the past that still trouble us, and it might not be easy to discuss our problems with friends or family. It can be a relief to talk in confidence with someone who will truly listen and see things from our own point of view. Someone who can support us while we make sense of our feelings and work with us at our own pace towards finding our own solutions. This is what I will provide for you.

I have extensive experience in the mental health field having delivered counselling sessions at The Together Women Project, and Leeds Mind where I also provided one to one mental health support in the community.
When it’s not always possible to chat to a friend or loved one about personal issues counselling can be really helpful. Using a warm and down to earth style my sessions will use techniques to help discover the underlying symptoms, using a non direct approach. This will allow us to explore any issues you have, develop ways to overcome them, and move forward positively at a pace that feels right for you. As a fully qualified therapist, I offer help if you suffer emotional from problems with low self esteem, relationships, work related stress, abuse, child related issues, abandonment, drug abuse and addiction, amongst many others.

People come to talk to me for lots of reasons. Sometimes there is a defined problem, it may be longstanding or recent; it may be related to a life event or something upcoming that is raising anxiety; there may be questions or difficulties in some key relationships, or at work; it may not be clear at all, but you are experiencing unease and wish to get to the bottom of why. Coming to talk to a trained and registered psychotherapist guarantees a secure, safe and confidential space in which to explore any or all of the above, alone, as a couple or in a family group.

Hi, my name is Jessica Jeffrey. Clients usually call me Jess. I see adult clients (18+) for a wide range of difficulties. I can help with anxiety (from low level anxiety to anxiety disorders), depression, grief, low self-esteem or a feeling of no longer being the person you once were. Lots of clients come and see me because they sense that something 'isn't quite right' but feel too overwhelmed to know where to start or how to fix it. I see clients face to face in central Ilkley (next to Bettys, upstairs) on Thursdays and Fridays (I currently have a very small waiting list for Friday sessions).

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
