My main areas of work are Addiction, Trauma, Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Substance Abuse, Anxiety, Depression and Obsessive Thinking.
My belief is that getting better through positive change and understanding is the aim of good therapy. Being able to share and process your inner thinking and emotional problems with a non judgemental person is key to recovery. My job as your counsellor is to provide a safe and confidential space for you to explore, work through and understand your inner issues.

There are times in our lives when we're not OK, when we believe that no one understands our struggles, that we alone should fix them, or that things will never change. But it needn't be like this. I specialise in supporting people experiencing: various forms of anxiety (including social, health, stress, work-place) • low-mood and depression • effects of trauma • low self-esteem • addictions and substance dependency • relationship issues. I can help change your limiting thoughts, feelings and behaviours so that you can make sense of your past experiences, find new perspectives, cope with present struggles, and regain your confidence.

My specialism is the area of unconscious impulses, drives and processes; the part of the mind that leads to repeatedly doing the things that one does not want to do, and the disruption to positive progression in the things that one does want to do. Often, thinking, actions and behaviour can leave someone feeling confused, even bewildered which over time gives rise to extraordinary worries, compulsions obsessions, panic, anxiety, depression and can even manifest in the form of physical illness. Resolution brings about inner peace, contentment, clarity of thought, improved decision making, self esteem and confidence.

Are you struggling with aspects of your life? You may have already tried to talk about it with friends and family but you still feel unresolved. You might have issues that you feel you can only talk about in a safe and confidential space. There may be times when you feel absolutely fine but there are times when you can't cope from within and you don't understand it. We push difficult issues deep into our unconscious but it still influences our conscious lives. Are there significant events from your childhood that you can't find peace with in your present day? This can leave you feeling despair like you have no control.

Are you struggling with the stresses and strains that family, friendship, and/ or work life can bring and unsure what to do? Life is not always easy or straightforward, our lives can become challenging at times, causing us to feel overwhelmed with an array of complex emotions which can have an impact on our daily lives. Very often we don’t have someone that we can completely share our innermost thoughts and feelings with so having someone who is a trained professional, allows the opportunity to open up and confide in. I trust that I am able to provide a safe, non-judgemental space to work collaboratively with you.

I understand that to make that first call or email for counselling can be extremely difficult, the fact you’re here means you’ve taken the first step towards making positive changes in your life. Are you stuck, feeling lost or alone, afraid or upset? I aim to help you to make sense of your fears, worries and anxieties. Many people find it easier to talk to someone who they see as being separate to their life rather than friends or family. I can help you make sense of experiences of the past and resolve complicated feelings linked to these. Therapy can be used to better yourself, allowing you to take complete control of your life.

Addiction Counsellors
What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
