I work online with clients struggling with the short-term or long-term impact of abuse, loss and trauma. The wounds of parental abuse, narcissistic abuse, betrayal, sexual abuse, spiritual abuse or professional abuse can remain forever open, derailing our lives and preventing us from moving on to find happiness and fulfilment. In my clients' journey toward healing from the pain and loss such experiences have cost them, I accompany them back into the hurt of the past to untangle the bonds that anchor them there and teach them skills for coping with the present and for developing relationships to help them find a happier future.

Welcome. My name is Terina. Therapy is a bit like a walk through a forest that we agree to go on together. We don't yet know what the experience will be like, where it will take us or what might come up and we can't determine the outcome - it is new and unknown for both of us. The difference between us (therapist and client) is that I have walked similar paths before so I am able to recognise the challenge and your courage in taking the first step. The important thing is, we do this walk together. I can offer you my support, empathy and honesty and the space to explore anything that matters to you, without judgement.

I believe every person is the expert in their own life. Together we can explore the circumstances that are feeling difficult for you, with space to reflect, hear yourself think and take a deeper look at what might be behind what's happening for you. Whether you're feeling stuck, struggling to overcome painful experiences, or feeling trapped in patterns you can't seem to change. I won't tell you what to do, but I will help you to find your own insights and clarity to process your feelings and move forward in ways that work for you.

Often clients come to me when they are seeking deep or broad change in themselves. They have often tried more brief forms of therapy, including CBT. Commonly, this has helped but not enough, and there is a wish or a need to get to something deeper over a longer period of time. I work with a range of presenting issues, most commonly depression, anxiety and 'people pleasing', stuckness and relationship problems. What my clients tend to have in common is a wish to understand themselves at some depth, including how the past is unconsciously impacting on their present lives. This forms the starting point for change in the self.

When emotional problems arise it can be difficult to know where to turn and pressures to cope can leave us isolated and desperate. There may be people around who offer their time but feelings of shame and fears can make it difficult to make use of them. It might be that there is no-one to speak to and problems originating in the past are getting in the way of you finding satisfaction in life. Traumas can remain unprocessed and present themselves in everyday life. Psychotherapy is a way of exploring oneself and relationships to try to make sense of the patterns and issues that are blocking you.

You feel like you can’t cope, you’re fed up, you’ve had enough. Your life isn’t what you want it to be. Living has become hard and there’s no joy in your world. It’s like everyone else except you is happy. You’re haunted by your past. You think you’ll never be happy again. You feel alone like no one else understands how hard your life is at the moment. On the outside you look fine but inside you feel like you’re dying. Everything you do feels like an act to look like you’re okay. You don’t know how to change things or what to do about it anymore.

The relationships and experiences that we have, shape the way that we understand the world around. These can make us feel uneasy, and we need to think out aloud. Having an objective ear can help to better understand ourselves. This can be related to personal relationships, our working life, family challenges, life events and many aspects of the world around us. I offer a space that works ethically, and within the boundaries of confidentiality and safeguarding. I aim to support exploration of how challenges and concerns can be overcome in a collaborative way and at your pace. I offer individual counselling.

Sometimes life can feel like a struggle, a struggle that you feel alone with. It doesn't matter how many people are around you or not, the feeling remains the same, isolation and a lack of support. Interactions with others may not feel authentic, they may bring up feelings of anxiety, a lack of safety or even feelings of deficiency or self-blaim. And the most confusing part is that your experience of yourself alone, or with others, makes little sense.

Clients who see me might be facing difficult life issues, relationship problems or feel stuck. Sometimes clients are grappling with questions of self and identity. Often my clients engage in therapy to help them with symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and/or past trauma. Being heard in a safe, confidential space can alleviate distress, clarify feelings and experiences. This can help you to figure out the changes you want to make and move forward in life. Making such changes can be challenging, but it can also help you become more resilient and build relationships that are more meaningful to you.

Sometimes we feel we are not happy in the life that we are living and coming to terms with it or making a change can feel like an insurmountable task. Or we endure a loss that leaves us feeling utterly devastated; the breakdown of a friendship, the demise of a marriage, the death of a significant person, a parental or sibling estrangement. You may not even know what is wrong but you have an innate sense that your anxiety and low mood need your attention. That the sadness and loneliness you are experiencing is overwhelming and you want to reach out to find some happiness. But we can lose our sense of perspective at such times.

Hello, my name is Andrew and I have counselled many people from various walks of lives including those on the autism spectrum. You may be feeling low in mood , motivation and feelings of what's the point. Relationship struggles with a partner, manager or family member can be debilitating and can lower our self-esteem and boundaries. You might be at a crossroads in your life where you need somebody to help reinforce that gut instinct that you have in your stomach. Having someone to listen to you and appreciate what you're going through can be life changing when you have nobody else to talk to. I have over 6000 hours experience.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
