Frank Chen M.D.

About

Frank Chen, M.D., is a practicing psychiatrist in Houston, Texas, who specializes in Adult Psychiatry. Dr. Chen is the Chief Medical Officer at Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital and Houston Adult Psychiatry. At both locations, he runs a team of Nurse Practitioners and Psychiatrists. Prior to transitioning to the private outpatient practice in 2003, he worked in private psychiatric hospitals and briefly in the correctional setting.

Dr. Chen’s expertise is focused on treating serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Dr. Chen also has a passion for working with college students who have been diagnosed with mental illness, likely for the first time. He helps his patients navigate these new changes in their mental health; how families can support their students; and how they can navigate the challenging treatment landscape with different medication options and services such as telemedicine.

Dr. Chen also serves as an instructor for a select number of nurse practitioner students at the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston and Texas Tech University. Here, he leads a rigorous program designed to understand the basics of a psychiatric assessment, familiarity with disease state, understanding of treatment options with an extensive focus on psychopharmacology.

On the personal side, Dr. Chen had a brother who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the time he started his Psychiatric Residency in 1998. He had the unfortunate opportunity to observe the progression of schizophrenia from the perspective of a clinician and an involved family member for more than 20 years. With a unique insight into schizophrenia, he now provides expert guidance sessions for family members who are supporting loved ones with serious mental illness. These sessions provide education and practical, realistic options that adhere to treatment guidelines.

Dr. Chen completed his undergrad at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993; received his M.D. from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1998; and completed a residency at Baylor College of Medicine in 2002.
