Do you have thoughts that scare you or make you feel ashamed? Do you wonder why you're having them and what they mean? Does it feel wrong/irresponsible/risky/dangerous to ignore the thoughts? You try to solve, figure out, and get rid of the thoughts quickly. You argue with the thoughts, but your mind argues back. You spend so much time distracting yourself and avoiding anyone or anything that triggers them. You’d give anything for the horrible thoughts/feelings to stop, but no matter what you do they keep coming back. You just want to feel better and live a normal life. If this sounds like you, I might be a great therapist for you.

Do you feel overwhelmed thinking about life? Maybe you have noticed some memory loss, and want to assess your overall brain health? Whether coping with depression, diabetes, dementia or neurological disease, most patients want to understand key body-mind interactions so they can age well. You may be in the same boat, seeking a therapist who complements your current medications, nutrition and exercise plans. Integrated biopsychosocial care is important to many patients, and that's my focus.

Perceptions...This is what we live out. The way we see the world and what we expect based on what we have experiences so far. Sometimes life does not ask you what you want, and it can get frustrating, and painful trying to live with, date or communicate with someone in your life that you can not understand. What has your history been? What did it teach you ? What do you want from your life? What would it take to get that? Sometimes an outside perspective can help you to see more clearly. Reaching out to someone with an objective view can help. I am trauma informed and specialize in Cluster B Personality Disorders.

You maybe doing fairly well in some areas of your life and in others you may feel that you could be functioning a lot better- in your interaction with others (children, parents, partner). There may be challenges in your relationships with colleagues; your choice of career does not seem to be meeting what you believe is your life purpose; you may not even know what your life purpose is! you may be struggling with self-worth and self-esteem issues; you may be experiencing just overall feelings of dissatisfaction in different aspects of your life..health, finances etc.

What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?

Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?

The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?

Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
