I operate from a trauma-informed person-centered approach, as I know that I am inviting clients to reveal vulnerable parts of themselves and should be met with nonjudgment and unconditional positive regard. My person-centered approach allows me to shift from a deficit based perspective to a strength-based perspective, allowing for a relational depth that transcends labels. My practice is grounded in providing affirming care to assist clients in embracing personal self-worth and bolstering personal agency.

It takes courage to seek help, so I commend you for taking this first step. Although therapy can seem intimidating, I view it as just like any other health service, such as the dentist or chiropractor. Just like how we visit the dentist if we have severe tooth pain or need a routine cleaning, I am here for both your traumatic experiences as well as maintenance sessions. No issue is too small when working with me and my practice, Arcadia Counselling. No one is meant to struggle alone, which is where I come in. Therapy looks different for everyone whether that is a place to unload, learn techniques, or improve your quality of life.

Does life keep catching up with you and knocking you off balance? Maybe you’re weighed down by worry, dread, exhaustion, or pain. Sometimes you look around and wonder, how did I get here? You might not recognize your work, relationships, body or home as they changed while you were busy taking care of everything and everyone else. Your empathy and compassion is a great strength, and yet there is a cost to caring that impacts your health and well-being. I help people with chronic illness, chronic pain, self-esteem, trauma and PTSD to have more energy & enjoy a renewed sense of purpose. It is possible to find a good balance.

Are you living with depression, despair, anxiety, anger, negative self-talk, relationship challenges, grief, shame or overwhelm? At one time I didn't know why my emotions flooded me nor what to do about it. You, too, may choose therapy to provide answers and healing. As a seniorpreneur it has been an honour to support hundreds of clients as they gain new awareness of their resilient, lovable, and resourceful core selves. One client shared, “Patricia, it is like my personal flashlight bringing me the ability to see light and a new, authentic path.” I would delight in assisting you in your journey.

Navigating any sudden change in your life can heighten your emotions. Are you experiencing higher normal levels of.......frustration, stress, sadness, fear and feelings of loss & uncertainty. Have you had relationship changes, life changes or lost dreams? Grief is the pain that accompanies loss. Because it is a reflection of what we love, it can feel all-encompassing. Grief is not limited to the people we love who have died. We grieve when we have lost, something or things that we value. Loss entails that a part of you, a piece of your life, has died. Grieving the life you imagined for yourself, your future, even your present.

Relationships in our lives present us with an infinite number of experiences that bring successes, challenges and everything in between. The stories that we live everyday contain relationships that form the foundation of our mental and physical well-being. There are times when we want the current stories in our life to continue and at other times we hope and need for something to change so that we can live the life we desire as an individual and in relation to others. Regardless of the challenges you are experiencing there is a way to find a path forward towards a desired story that will bring fulfillment and joy in your life.

We all struggle at times and I truly believe in a way through that is right for you. Art has always been a therapeutic and meaningful activity for me. Putting art together with psychotherapy seems like the most natural thing in the world. There is insight and growth to be found in the art-making process. Creativity and imagination are inborn resources for each individual to claim.

I believe everyone has strengths, support, and a desire for growth. Such support needs to encompass unconditional positive regard and understanding. It is important to meet clients where they are and strive towards their goals with compassion, while gently challenging beliefs. I believe that all clients have a unique perspective of their situation, which is rooted in their identity, values, and culture. My previous work with disadvantaged populations and clients on their grief journey taught me that the challenges individuals face are contextualized to their sociocultural positionality, identity, and relationship dynamics.

We have the ability to find our best answers. Sometimes those answers have been lost amongst all the other pieces of our lives and it can be a challenge to discover them. As your therapist and companion I support you as you identify and choose which pieces serve you and which get left behind. With attention, I get to know you, your values and beliefs, and this allows us to develop the approach that is tailored to you, your life, your future.

Getting to the point where you feel like you need therapy can feel awful. You have probably tried many ways of getting better and they haven't worked for you or not well enough. Are you tired of feeling overwhelmed, confused, powerless and disconnected from yourself and others? You don't need to feel like you aren't good enough. You don't need to feel stuck in anger, sadness, fear or disgust. You don't need to feel like your past is heavy and weighing you down in the present. You can process your past so you can live in the present moment. You can feel good about yourself and connect to others. You deserve joy now and in the future.

It is hard to reach out for support or to even consider reaching out when you are struggling. Perhaps you are experiencing a sense of grief, loss, or burnout leaving you feeling stuck and unsure about what the future holds? Perhaps you are feeling adrift and need someone to talk to as you figure out what to do next? Sometimes we find our past experiences interfere with the present and all of us face challenges that require extra support. Counselling can help you gain a better understanding of yourself, your relationships, and the changes you wish to implement to achieve further growth.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
