Are you feeling increasingly drained, emotionally reactive, or resentful? Do you take on too many responsibilities and worry about disappointing others? Is it hard to ask for help because you need things done right or do not want to be a burden? If so, you are not alone. Many of my clients do amazing work, care deeply for others, and are driven by high standards for themselves– but despite their best efforts and successes, they feel overwhelmed and struggle with self-worth. They may appear to be confident and living ideal lives, but they deal with high-functioning anxiety and have difficulties speaking up for their own needs.

Contextual forces of family, community, historical events, and trauma shape the brain from conception through the lifespan. Less than optimal circumstances can lead to a compromised nervous system and the formation of maladaptive patterns in the brain and body. As a result, you may suffer from symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, poor emotional regulation, difficulty in relationships, addictions, dissociation; and even autoimmune disorders or physical symptoms that cannot be explained medically. If you want to heal stuck patterns, live authentically with more joy and less fear, and have better relationships, I can help!

Being a person is HARD. Maybe life has been feeling more difficult than usual. Maybe something happened recently that made it clear you needed support. Or maybe you just woke up today and decided it’s time to stop avoiding things. Regardless of how you got here, I'm glad you are. I won’t sugarcoat it - Therapy is hard. And as a counselling client myself, I know what it’s like to sit in that chair. I know the vulnerability and risk involved in what counselling asks of us. So I won’t push you into anything you don’t want to do. I will meet you where you’re at and facilitate movement towards goals that are meaningful for you.

While it may take courage to reach out for a first therapy session, nobody is meant to face life's difficulties alone. In my practice, I primarily support those struggling with grief and loss, anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, emotional regulation, difficult or unexpected life-transitions, communication, and finding a healthy balance in one’s life. In my Counselling and Spirituality Master’s Program, I was taught to consider the whole person in treatment. In this way, if a client wishes to incorporate their values and spirituality in therapy, I am happy to do so in a way that honours their own cultural or faith background.

I help my clients live congruently with their life's core values, life purposes, and reclaim parts of themselves that may have been lost or forgotten. Therapy means choosing to heal and orienting ourselves to the full scope of reality so that we can respond effectively to whatever challenges are currently in front of us. I understand that the pain from trauma/injustice can feel overwhelming/all-consuming. But we are so much MORE than the traumas and injustices we've experienced. I help clients redefine themselves outside of their pain so that they are liberated to live life with hope, feelings of worthiness, and peace.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
